Position Summary
Under direction, learn and perform mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic repair and maintenance of electric-power generating and control equipment.
Essential Functions
- Installs, maintains and repairs machinery, equipment, physical structures and pipe systems following specifications, blueprints, manuals and schematic drawings, using hand tools, power tools, hoist crane and measuring and testing instruments.
- Visually inspects and tests machinery and equipment.
- Listens for unusual sounds from machines or equipment to detect malfunctions and discusses machine operation variations with supervisors or other maintenance workers to diagnose problems or repair machines.
- Dismantles defective machines and equipment and install new or repaired parts.
- Cleans and lubricates shafts, bearings, gears and other parts of machinery.
- Lays out, assembles, installs and maintains pipe systems and related hydraulic and pneumatic equipment.
- Installs machinery and equipment.
- Sets up and operates machine tools, such as lathe, grinder, drill and milling machine to repair or fabricate machine parts, jigs and fixtures and tools.
- Operates cutting torch or welding equipment to cut or join metal parts.
- Assembles, analyzes defects in and repairs boilers, pressure vessels, tanks and vats in field.
- Attaches rigging or signal crane operator to lift parts to specified position.
- Aligns structures or plate sections to assemble boiler frame, tanks or vats, using plumb bobs, levels, wedges, dogs or turnbuckles.
- Hammers, flame-cuts, files or grinds irregular edges of sections or structural parts to facilitate fitting edges together.
- Bolts or arc-welds structures and sections together.
- Repairs fabricated parts such as chutes, air heaters, fan stands, catwalks, ladders, coal hoppers, conveyors and pulverizers.
- Installs manholes, handholes, valves, gauges and feedwater connection in drums to complete assembly of water tube boilers.
- Repairs boilers or tanks in field by unbolting or flame-cutting defective sections or tubes, straightening plates, using torch or jacks, installing new tubes and fitting and welding new sections.
- May be required to work after hours, on call, weekends and holidays.
- Performs other duties, tasks and special projects as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS: High school diploma or equivalent, Mechanical Technical degree preferred, at least 1-year experience in industrial maintenance, and valid Driver's License
Working Conditions
Industrial environment with ability to exert a moderate degree of physical effort including climbing, balancing, standing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, walking and the assisted lifting of objects and materials up to 50 pounds. Ability to work in confined spaces and high areas with electrical hazards. Ability to work in confined spaces including, but not limited to: generators, transformers, breakers, tanks, wire vaults, scrubber modules, boiler, precipitator, vessels, etc. Ability to work in areas of excessive height including, but and not limited to 400-foot stack, 100-foot ball field lights, support structure beams, switchyard structures, manlifts, scrubber module structures, boiler structures, precipitator structures, vessel structures, etc. and to climb into those locations with the necessary tools and safety equipment. Ability to perceive and discriminate sounds and depths. Exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, odors, humidity, temperature and noise extremes, wetness, strong or toxic agents or chemical, machinery and vibrations. Specific vision abilities include close vision and distance vision with varied lighting. Use of personal computing equipment, telephone, multi-functioning printer and calculator. Ability to travel to and from meetings, training sessions or other business-related events. May be required to work after hours to include weekends and holidays.
