Job Summary
A switch heater electrician is a skilled professional responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical systems related to railroad switches. Switch heater electricians install, inspect, and maintain these heaters to ensure proper functioning.
Primary Activities and Responsibilities
- Ensure compliance with all railroad rules and regulations for safety, operations and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA)
- Ensure compliance with National Electrical Code, National Electrical Safety Code and the Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace (NFPA-70E)
- Switch heaters prevent ice buildup on railroad switches, ensuring they function correctly during cold weather.
- These electric heaters are placed near the switches. When activated, they generate heat to melt snow and ice, preventing the switches from freezing in place
- Switch heaters consist of electrical elements (such as resistive wires) embedded within the switch components
- Electricians install switch heaters according to specifications and safety guidelines.
- Regular inspections are essential to identify any issues or malfunctions.
- When switch heaters malfunction, electricians troubleshoot and repair them promptly.
- Interpret and follow electrical codes, manuals, schematic diagrams, blueprints and other specifications
- Handle testing instruments for measuring voltage, current power, insulation resistance, etc.

Pay Rate
$39.25/hour
Training
You will attend paid training in Atlanta, GA. CSX will pay for travel and lodging as required by collective bargaining agreement.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma/GED
- 18 years of age or older
- Valid Driver's License
- 4 or more years' experience in electrical work
- One year experience reading and interpreting technical drawings or schematics
- Ability to obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
Preferred Qualifications
- Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
- Master Electrician
- Licensed Journeyman
Physical Requirements
- Heavy work, lifting up to 70 pounds occasionally and up to 100 pounds on a rare basis
- Stoop/bend/kneel/crouch/crawl/balance/climb
- Demonstrate auditory and visual acuity/tracking/inspection
- Distinguish color coded wiring
