As a Chief Building Engineer for a hospital, you will be responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the hospital's physical infrastructure and building systems. Your primary goal will be to maintain a conducive environment for patients, staff, and visitors by overseeing the maintenance, repair, and operation of various mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems. Your technical expertise and problem-solving skills will play a critical role in supporting the hospital's mission of providing high-quality healthcare services.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Facility Maintenance and Repairs:
- Conduct routine inspections and preventive maintenance tasks for all building systems, including electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and HVAC systems.
- Respond promptly to maintenance requests, troubleshoot issues, and coordinate repairs to ensure the uninterrupted operation of critical hospital infrastructure.
- Keep accurate records of maintenance activities, equipment status, and repair history.
2. Emergency Response:
- Be available for on-call duties and respond to emergency situations promptly, such as power outages, equipment failures, or plumbing issues.
- Coordinate with other hospital staff, contractors, and external service providers during emergency situations to resolve issues effectively and minimize disruptions.
3. Energy Management:
- Monitor energy consumption and implement energy-saving initiatives to promote sustainability and cost-effectiveness.
- Recommend and implement energy-efficient upgrades or retrofits to enhance the hospital's environmental performance.
4. Compliance and Safety:
- Ensure that all building systems and equipment meet safety, health, and environmental regulations, including compliance with local, state, and federal codes.
- Conduct regular safety inspections, identify potential hazards, and take appropriate measures to mitigate risks and maintain a safe environment.
5. Equipment Procurement and Budgeting:
- Collaborate with hospital management and procurement teams to assess equipment needs, research options, and make recommendations for equipment purchases or upgrades.
- Assist in preparing and managing the budget for the building engineering department, including equipment purchases, maintenance contracts, and other operational expenses.
6. Project Management:
- Oversee construction and renovation projects related to building infrastructure, working closely with contractors and vendors to ensure quality and adherence to project timelines.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- Previous experience as a building engineer or facilities manager, preferably in a healthcare or hospital setting.
- Strong knowledge of building systems, including electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and HVAC systems.
- Understanding of relevant building codes, safety regulations, and environmental standards.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to diagnose and troubleshoot complex technical issues.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills to work collaboratively with hospital staff and external vendors.
- Detail-oriented and organized, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities.
- Certification in relevant areas (e.g., Certified Healthcare Facility Manager - CHFM) is a plus.
