The ESL Intervention Specialist will be responsible for working with elementary school children who speak little to no English and preparing them to learn beginning reading skills and basic math skills. The specialist will provide targeted English as a Second Language (ESL) interventions to support the academic and linguistic development of English language learners at the elementary school level.
**Responsibilities:
1. Assessment and Evaluation:
- Conduct initial assessments of English language proficiency and academic skills of students who speak no English.
- Develop and implement ongoing formative assessments to monitor student progress and identify areas for intervention.
2. Individualized Instruction:
- Plan and deliver individualized or small group ESL instruction tailored to the specific language and academic needs of each student.
- Create and implement engaging, age-appropriate lessons that focus on developing listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in English.
3. Collaboration:
- Collaborate with classroom teachers, school administrators, and parents to develop and implement support plans for English language learners.
- Provide guidance and support to both our Intervention Specialists and classroom teachers in adapting instructional materials and activities to meet the needs of ESL students.
4. Cultural Sensitivity:
- Foster a culturally responsive and inclusive learning environment that respects and celebrates the diverse cultural backgrounds of English language learners.
- Communicate with parents by completing quarterly student progress reports and attending the school’s parent-teacher conferences.
5. Professional Development:
- Stay current with best practices and research-based strategies for teaching ESL to elementary school students.
- Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance expertise in ESL instruction and linguistic development.
6. Progress Monitoring:
- Maintain accurate records of student progress and communicate regularly with parents and stakeholders regarding student growth and areas of improvement.
7. Resource Development:
- Develop and curate instructional resources, materials, and activities that cater to the linguistic and academic needs of ESL students.
8. Additional Responsibilities:
- Conduct one student assessment each month.
- Complete administrative responsibilities throughout the program including:
- attendance
- Weekly lesson plans
- Goal Setting
- Use the Google platform to complete daily and weekly tasks (G-mail, Google Drive, Google Hangouts, etc.).
- Attend all relevant content area training and mandatory monthly team meetings.
- Assist in the collection of migrant student eligibility data needed for each round of new referred students.
- Complete a background check and any training required by the Archdiocese to work with children in a Catholic School.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), ESL, or a related field. Master’s degree preferred.
- Valid teaching certification with ESL endorsement or specialization.
- Experience working with elementary school children who speak no English, preferably in an ESL or bilingual education setting.
- Knowledge of second language acquisition theories and instructional strategies for English language learners.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with diverse stakeholders.
- Cultural competence and sensitivity to students from various cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
