This position is responsible for working with Executives, Project Executives, Project Managers, and Estimators to secure profitable work across all divisions of the company. They are also responsible for the completion of thorough estimates and budgets, whether solely or in collaboration with other Estimators/Project Managers.
This position reports to the Director of Estimating.
Preconstruction Services
Project/Bid Selection
- Participate as needed in the Go/No-Go process.
Bid Preparation
- Attend pre-bid/preliminary project meetings.
- Act as the Estimate Lead when necessary and practical.
- Participate in the estimating/budgeting process as needed.
- Ensure that all estimates are completed thoroughly, accurately, and timely by following the Estimate Review Guidelines
- Lead estimating team to ensure a complete and thorough estimate is submitted on time
Conceptual Estimating
- Help set the strategic direction by determining the most efficient approach needed for each conceptual opportunity.
- Become an expert when it comes to Costs, Methods, and Processes
- Utilize historical info as a tool to develop the estimate.
- Train others in these processes.
- Implement technology and software to improve the timing and accuracy of budgets and pricing.
General Estimating
Bid Strategy
- Communicate with customers to define the project scope, address deficiencies, negotiate pricing, and build relationships.
- Understand bid climate and competition.
- Collaborate with estimating team to set initial labor and markup strategy.
- Work with vendors to determine favorable pricing that is available, in order to give us a competitive edge.
- Be prepared to discuss risks, deficiencies, advantages, etc. with executive management to make a proper assessment of the final bid pricing.
- Perform necessary research to produce accurate, complete, and competitive pricing.
Bid Preparation and Oversight
- Coordinate resources and workload to ensure timely delivery of all estimates and proposals.
- Investigate and recommend best industry practices and standards.
- Evaluate vendor quotes and subcontract proposals cost, clarifications, and exceptions.
- Manage estimating processes and timelines to meet company objectives, both short and long term.
- Independently execute accurate take offs of electrical drawings.
- Submit RFIs as needed to architects, engineers, and/or general contractors for clarification on scope of work and drawing details.
- Prepare necessary bid documents and proposals to meet deadlines.
- Understand market conditions to make recommendations on fees, escalation, and contingency.
- Attend preliminary site meetings.
- Periodically assist the project teams in preparation of field change order estimates.
- Periodically assist the Project Manager with subcontract/vendor negotiations.
Mentoring and Training
Training Program
- Assist in the training of estimating and project management team members.
- Plan and schedule regular mentoring sessions with new hires as required.
- Perform training in estimating software and techniques as needed.
Business Development
Maintaining Relationships
- Develop and nurture client and vendor relationships.
- Maintain relationships with counterparts at GC/CM firms to gain us a strategic advantage over our competitors.
Other Duties
Post Job Review Data
- Participate in post job meetings.
- Collate and communicate data on lessons learned.
Job Kickoff, Site Visits, and Reviews
- Partner with Operations to properly transfer awarded projects and perform buyouts when necessary.
- Continually make construction site visits to review and learn how the installations are performing.
- Participate in monthly job reviews as appropriate.
Experience
The qualified candidate will have five or more years of construction estimating experience.
