Job Summary:
The Area Leader/CNC Machinist at STC is a highly motivated individual that oversees and leads a production team department cell. They plan, organize, and recommend strategies in ensuring that the technical ceramics in the cell are developed successfully, in accordance with specifications. They use precise and detailed machining skills to operate STC’s CNC lathes, mills and grinding equipment. They have a strong willingness to learn, strong teamwork, positive attitude, dedication, and have job flexibility. This position will also interface with, engineering, management as well as production.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Leads a dedicated cell and responsible for planning execution, controlling, and coordinating the entire range of manufacturing activities within the given product line, including Safety, Quality, Delivery, Inventory and Productivity.
- Troubleshoots work-in-process manufacturing issues with the product or machine, initiating corrective actions as required. Work with manufacturing engineers to ensure that all customer requirements are understood, implemented, and met throughout the cell.
- Communicates regularly within Operations to ensure changes and issues are flowed expediently to customers, planning, sales, and production supervisors/managers to manage and control quality and resulting scrap to protect program profitability and Company goals.
- Analyzes job orders, drawings, blueprints, other data, and then performs necessary CNC calculations.
- Effectively writes and edits CNC computer programs that contain program codes “M”, “G” and conversational.
- Manually sets up machine work and parts.
- Ensures achievement of all Operational KPIs for associated cell (Lost Time Accidents, Revenue, On-Time Delivery, Scrap, etc)
- Leads team in Continuous Improvement initiatives to eliminate waste and improve efficiencies.
- Provide weekly communications to Supervision/Management/Account Management describing weekly achievements and issues within the cell. Ensuring a smooth interface with supporting departments not under the cell leader’s control (E.g. Supply Chain, Sales, Quality, Engineering)
- Ensures capacity and capability are continually planned to meet agreed customer requirements and work and information flow are documented and regularly reviewed to ensure smooth and rapid execution of customer requirements.
- Identifies opportunities for cross training and capacity training to enhance capacity and responsiveness to know customer requirements.
- Manages individual and team performance, regularly reviewing with Supervisors and Managers, rewards excellence and the achievement of bettering or targets, and taking corrective action when necessary. Responsible for hiring and training all new employees in the cell.
- Assesses conditions of the equipment, responsible for all maintenance requests when necessary. Perform routine preventative maintenance on equipment as required.
- Maintains ordering for supplies for the cell, to ensure a smooth and efficient flow of production work.
- Sets up production equipment and run production, as needed.
- Responsible for quality sign-off at machine start-up and in-process inspection checks for associated production sequences.
- Maintains STC’s adherence to and aid in the development of work instructions, guidelines, and specific part requirements.
- Other duties as assigned, including but not limited to, performing a variety of other machining and CNC operations in any of STC’s three production locations.
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:
- 5-7 years of production experience, preferably in a lead or supervisory role
- Technical Degree in manufacturing/production or equivalent work experience
- 3 years of experience operating CNC machines
- 2 years using CAM (Computer Aided Machining), CAD (Computer Aided Drafting), equivalent work experience is plus
- Full understanding of machine language. Fanuc and conversational programing
- Strong organization skills and the ability to work under pressure
- Ability to work independently, and under the pressure of deadlines
- Strong, clear, and effective written and verbal communication skills and ability to interact with users in clear non-technical terms.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work is normally performed on site at STC’s office in St. Albans, Vermont. Work is generally performed both on the shop floor, which can be noisy and dusty, as well as hot during the summer and in the office. Desk work is performed in a climate-controlled environment.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Work involves prolonged periods of standing and walking. The Manufacturing Cell Leader may be required to bend and/or squat to properly inspect or run equipment. Must be able to lift to 50 lbs. and push hand carts loaded with up to 500 lbs. Deadlines, workloads during peak periods and changing priorities may cause increased stress levels.
