High School Counselor
Primary Purpose:
- To help high school students and junior high or middle school students overcome problems that impede learning and to personally and directly assist them in making occupational and life plans that hold promise for their fulfillment as mature and responsible men and women.
- Assist the high school principal and staff in the registration of all students
- Work to prevent students from dropping out of school.
- Under the auspices of the principal, selects and administers, and/or coordinates the standardized testing efforts of the attendance area schools
- Assist the principal in maintaining the permanent cumulative files for each student.
- Assist students in evaluating their aptitudes and abilities through the interpretation of individual standardized test scores and other pertinent data, and work with the students and parents in developing the students’ educational and occupational plans in terms of such evaluations
- Plan guidance field trips to schools, colleges, businesses and industry for interested students, as well as having those organizations visit the school in an annual "Career Day" program.
- Help students make the occupational choice, post-secondary educational choices, and career evaluations that will lead them to meaningful, successful and rewarding work.
- Acquaint students (and parents) with college entrance requirements, i.e. admissions ACT, SAT, TSI etc.. and help them to make a realistic comparison between the student's record and abilities, and the specific entrance requirements of the college in which the student is interested.
- Aid senior students with all of the processes of college application including application for financial aid where needed to include any college readiness platform i.e Naviance, Applied Texas, SENDedu etc.
- Oversee the calculation of senior grade point averages and class rankings, and processing of transcripts.
- Must maintain a constant dialogue and communications relationship with administration, faculty, and parents so as to better meet the needs of each student.
- Is actively involved in and serves as a resource person for the teacher/student advisor program of the school.
- Recognize the extent of his/her training and refer to other specialists those pupils whose problems go beyond his/her skills.
- Perform such other tasks and assumes such other responsibilities as may be assigned by the Principal, provided such assignments do not diminish the effectiveness of the counselor
Work with school faculty, staff, students, parents and community to plan, implement and evaluate a comprehensive developmental guidance and counseling program. Counsel students to fully develop each student’s academic, career, personal and social abilities and address the needs of special population students.
Qualifications
Education/Certification:
- Master’s degree in guidance counseling from an accredited four-year university or college
- Valid Texas certification as a Counselor, Special Education Counselor or Career and Technology/Vocational Counselor
Special Knowledge/Skills:
- Knowledge of counseling procedures, student appraisal and career development
- Excellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior
Experience:
- Two (2) years of classroom teaching in a public or accredited private school system
Guidance
1. Teach campus developmental guidance curriculum consistent with district’s guidance program plan and tailored to campus needs.
2. Assist teachers in the teaching of guidance-related curriculum.
3. Guide individuals and groups of students to develop educational plans and career awareness.
Counseling & Consultation
4. Provide counseling to students individually or in small groups as needed.
5. Consult parents, teachers, administrators and other relevant people to enhance their work with students.
6. Maintain a communication system that effectively collects and disseminates information to other professionals as appropriate.
7. Develop and maintain positive working relationships with other school professionals and representatives of community resources.
8. Work with school and community personnel to bring together resources for students.
Assessment
9. Participate in planning and evaluation of campus standardized testing programs.
10. Interpret tests and other appraisal results appropriately and communicate to school personnel, students and their parents.
11. Maintain confidentiality of student assessment and testing process.
Program Management
12. Plan and implement a balanced, school guidance and counseling program to ensure they meet identified needs, priorities, and program objectives.
13. Educate school staff, students, parents and community about guidance and counseling
program/services.
Communication
14. Establish and maintain open channels of communication and professional relationships with students, parents, teachers, principals and other school personnel.
15. Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.
Professional Growth and Development
16. Participate in district and campus staff development programs that improve job-related skills.
17. Demonstrate interest and initiative in professional improvement.
Qualities of Effective Counselors
18. Keep informed of and comply with state, district, and federal program policies and procedures for classroom teachers, including daily attendance, punctuality and confidentiality.
19. Compile, maintain and file all reports, records and other required documents.
20. Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on committees as required.

Pay: $55,307.07 - $75,751.23 per year
