Overview
The Great Minds Advising team at Westchester Prep (westchesterprep.com/college-advising) is currently looking to hire a college admissions consultant to add to our dynamic and quickly-growing college advising team. Prospective advisors will receive paid training transitioning into a period of taking on students incrementally and building their roster over time.
About Us
The Great Minds Advising team boasts a nation-leading track record of success in helping students gain admission to top schools. We are comprised only of dedicated staff—located in the Greater New York Area and across the country—with an exceptional ability to drive students' personal growth and an unerring passion for helping students discover their passions. Despite our diverse academic backgrounds—ranging from neuroscience to theater—we are united by an obsessive focus on our students' college success. Put simply: we eat, breathe, and sleep college admissions.
We are members of the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC), partners with the Northwestern Center for Talent Development, and are often sought after for our expert admissions takes by outlets such as New York Times Magazine, New York Magazine, Bloomberg, NBC, and the BBC. We also host our own podcast, called “The Game: A Guide To Elite College Admissions.”
Role & Responsibilities
Given our highly selective process for admitting students and families to our program—as well as the comprehensive nature of our work, covering every aspect through full completion of applications—advisors can rest assured they will be working with highly-motivated, high-achieving students with complete buy-in.
The college admissions consultant’s role will be to help high school students navigate the college admissions process—and interface with our team or, occasionally, families—in ways including (but not limited to) the following:
- helping students identify unique passions, interests, and strengths that will collectively form their admissions “story” and help to differentiate them from other competitive applicants
- facilitating their resume-building process, which will be centered on each student’s unique admissions story, once identified. Activities are wide-ranging and might include clubs, leadership, summer programs, research, internships, independent projects, self-created organizations, publications, college/online coursework, awards and competitions, or other relevant pursuits
- strategizing around and helping oversee students’ course selections, academic grades, and standardized testing so as to maximize the foundation of their applications
- curating school lists and visit plans that are maximally calibrated to the best and best-fit colleges students can reasonably gain admission based on their profiles, utilizing our high-precision candidacy analyses
- encouraging and supporting strategic selection of early decision or early action plans at students’ top-choice schools so as to significantly increase their odds of admission
- guiding students in building meaningful relationships with their teachers and counselors, while creating impactful classroom and school community personas
- helping students present and supply unique details about their classroom and school impact to teachers and counselors for letters of recommendation
- optimizing student presentation and selection of intended majors on a school-by-school basis to give them the greatest chance of admission, based on final candidacy themes/strengths, interests, demographics, and major-specific competitiveness at each college
- providing beginning-to-end strategy and execution on all application components, which will collectively spotlight students’ unique admissions stories and speak to the very specific ways in which they will benefit from, and contribute to, any given college—both inside and outside the classroom
- communicating with our team daily over Slack—including with briefings, updates, and any questions or concerns relating to student cases
- attending 1-2 weekly training or team breakout meetings over Zoom (flexibly scheduled)
- communicating with parents on occasion in a way that presents the company in a maximally compelling and expert manner
