POSITION: Surgical Technician
DEPARTMENT: ALL Areas of Clinical Operations
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION
Under the general supervision of the Nursing Supervisor, the Surgical Technologist scrubs for surgical procedures and demonstrates competence while functioning as a member of the surgical team. Prepares and maintains supplies, instruments and equipment related to these procedures. Supports the philosophy, objectives, and goals of the Surgery Center. Supports and participates in quality improvement activities.
RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Performs surgical team functions under the direct supervision of the surgeon and Registered Nurse in the OR.
2. Prepares and maintains supplies, instruments, equipment, and rooms for surgical procedures.
3. Competency in area of practice.
4. Demonstrates and adheres to principles of aseptic techniques.
5. Knowledgeable of all basic set-ups for surgical procedures.
6. Assists in ensuring patient safety.
7. Scrubs, gowns, and gloves members of surgical team following aseptic techniques.
8. Assists in set up of operating room with all necessary equipment and supplies.
9. Assists with the preparation, transportation, and monitoring of patients.
10. Arranges instruments according to routine for given procedure.
11. Handles instruments according to routine for given procedure.
12. Maintains sterile field throughout the surgical procedure.
13. Performs room clean up following procedures, as well as general housekeeping duties.
14. Provide assistance in emergency situations as directed.
15. Functions in the role of second assistant following successful skills demonstration.
16. Provide assistance to team members, physicians, and anesthesia personnel as needed (i.e., reliability, initiative, work relations, training needs).
17. Reviews physicians’ preference cards and updates as needed.
18. Assists with stocking, preparation, and waste management of supplies.
19. Performs other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
1. High school graduate or equivalent.
2. Completion of an appropriate technician program or previous technician experience of at least two years.
3. CPR certification within probationary period.
4. Reads, writes, speaks, and comprehends the English language.
5. Intermittent physical mobility/activity including walking, standing, sitting, light lifting, pulling, or pushing of carts, equipment, etc. Must be able to bend body downward at the waist; be able to kneel. Able to lift /carry up to approximately 25 pounds.
6. Must have visual acuity at least 20 inches or less.
7. Must be able to adapt to cool and noisy working conditions.
8. In normal workday, employee may stand for 4-6 hours, walk 3 hours, and sit 1 hour.
9. Must be able to identify and distinguish colors.
10. Must have ability to coordinate eyes and hands quickly and accurately.
11. Must have ability to manipulate small objects quickly and accurately.
12. Must be able to work with hands in turning and placing objects in space.
13. Must be able to perceive objects accurately as to size, temperature, and texture.
14. Must have auditory acuity.
15. Must be able to stand for long periods of time.
16. Mental and physical health sufficient to meet the demands of the position.
