Summary
The animal care associates are the force behind the day-to-day care of the animals housed at the shelter. They are a small team that works hard to provide the daily necessities to the animals.
Working Relationship
Works closely with the animal care manager, customer service representatives and other animal care technicians, provides assistance to animal care and control when needed.
Essential Functions
1. Provide quality animal care and give humane protection and treatment of animals. 2. Act as a team member, show enthusiasm and help other staff and volunteers.
3. Provide daily care to animals including but not limited to: feeding, grooming, training, temperament testing, assessing, and medicating.
4. Scheduling spay/neuter surgery, and microchipping for adoptable pets.
5. Clean and disinfect cages, kennels, and food dishes to meet written standards.
6. Carefully check all animals for diseases and injuries daily.
7. Fill out paperwork accurately, completely, and on time.
8. Prioritize and use good time management to increase efficiency.
9. Promptly report deficiencies and suggest improvements to shelter manager.
10. Follow protocol for sick animals and movement of animals around the shelter.
11. Act safely at all times to prevent accidents and injuries.
12. Responsible for removing and recycling shelter waste.
13. Provide excellent customer service to increase adoptions and redemptions, build credibility, and increase the number of customers.
14. Prioritize customer service above projects.
15. Follow policies and procedures with consistency and good judgment.
16. Be knowledgeable about our services and history to answer customers’ questions.
17. Understand and support the principles and objectives of animal welfare.
18. Enthusiastic about serving the public with a consistent positive mental attitude.
19. Able to work as a team and accept direction and constructive criticism.
20. Maintain good grooming and personal hygiene.
21. Ability to handle tight deadlines and maintain composure under stress.
22. Other duties as assigned.
Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
1. 18 years or older
2. Excellent English verbal and written communication skills.
3. High school diploma or GED.
4. Able to safely lift and carry 75 pounds, including living and deceased animals
5. Willing to work holidays and weekends.
6. Ability to learn and interpret laws and ordinances governing animal care and control and teach others.
7. Demonstrate ability to express ideas effectively, both orally and in writing.
8. Ability to work harmoniously with other employees.
9. Ability to perform humane euthanasia with compassion and pass all certifications, as required.
10. Desire to serve the mission of the organization
11. Excellent customer service skills, ability to interact patiently and tactfully with a diverse customer base.
12. Emotional & Mental Requirements:
- Must be able to cope with death, due to injury, illness or euthanasia
- Ability to process information rapidly and accurately
- Ability to recognize a need for assistance and ask for help
- Ability to work independently and as part of team
- Ability to cope with frustrating situations and remain calm
Preferences
1. Shelter or animal control experience is preferred.
2. Spanish speaking preferred
Other Requirements
1. Have or be able to obtain a valid Washington State Driver’s License
2. Must pass a Washington State Patrol Background Check
Working Conditions
While performing the functions of this job, the Animal Care Associate is regularly required to talk and hear; frequently required to stand, walk, sit, and use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds without assistance and up to 100 pounds with assistance. Ability to safely handle all types of animals. Must be physically fit to restrain animals. Noise level in the work environment is often loud. May be exposed to unpleasant odors. May be exposed to bites, scratches and contagious diseases.
