Job Summary: We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Large Mammal Veterinarian to join our team. This role involves providing comprehensive veterinary care to large mammals, including those in zoo and wildlife settings. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in veterinary practices, particularly in anesthesia, surgery, and routine health management for large mammals.
Key Responsibilities:
- Medical Care and Surgery: Diagnose and treat illnesses, injuries, and diseases in large mammals. Perform surgeries, administer anesthesia, and oversee post-operative care.
- Preventive Healthcare: Develop and implement preventive healthcare programs, including vaccinations, parasite control, and regular health check-ups.
- Emergency Care: Provide emergency medical care as needed, including on-call services for urgent cases.
- Health Management: Monitor and maintain the overall health and well-being of large mammal populations under your care, including nutritional and environmental assessments.
- Record Keeping: Maintain detailed medical records for all animals, ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.
- Staff Training: Train and supervise veterinary technicians and other staff members in handling, care, and medical procedures for large mammals.
- Facility Management: Collaborate with facility managers to ensure that the living environments for animals meet health and safety standards.
- Research and Education: Participate in research projects related to large mammal health and conservation. Provide education and outreach to the public and other stakeholders about large mammal care and conservation efforts.
Qualifications:
- Educational Background: Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from an accredited institution.
- Experience: 5-10+ years of experience in veterinary practice with large mammals, preferably in a zoo or wildlife setting.
- Specialization: Specialized training or certification in large mammal care, with expertise in animal anesthesia and surgery.
- Skills: Strong diagnostic skills, proficiency in surgical procedures, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Physical Requirements: Ability to work in various outdoor environments and handle the physical demands of working with large animals.
