The Upstate Masonry Institute’s Director of Business Development and Marketing promotes the value of constructing with masonry to architects, engineers, owners, developers and the general public within the Upstate NY Region. Is responsible for the development and implementation of a comprehensive, integrated marketing strategy highlighting the benefits and importance of constructing with masonry, particularly utilizing union masonry contractors. Develops and maintains relationships with training providers to develop necessary and responsive workforce solutions.
The successful candidate will be a self-starter with high-energy and a proactive, customer service-oriented individual. Maturity and ability to work independently in a non-structured environment is key. The individual must possess excellent interpersonal skills and be an open-minded leader who is comfortable working both collaboratively, in partnership with others as well as on individual projects. Outstanding written and verbal communication as well as presentation skills are a must. Additionally, the ability to collaborate and interact well with senior executives and staff at all levels within the market is necessary to succeed.
Construction industry experience, preferably with masonry is a significant advantage. Technical understanding of masonry materials is important. Strong knowledge of social media is an advantage. Significant day travel and some overnight travel will be involved with the position. This position is a key component for the growth of the masonry industry in Upstate NY.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
Industry/Technical Promotion
- Sells/markets the use of masonry in construction to architects, engineers, owners and developers
- Promotes outreach and relationship-building efforts with architects, engineers, owners (both public and private), developers and other targeted organizations
- Is aware of projects early in the planning process and follows-up with appropriate key personnel regarding those projects
- Coordinates the design and development of all marketing materials such as brochures, websites, advertising and trade show displays
- Directs public relations and works with outside consultants
- Promotes the value of union masonry contractors
- Develops and implements strategies for the above
- Works collaboratively with industry partners on the above
- Networks through trade organizations, specific trade shows and associations that are relevant to the industry and mission
- Educates public officials and agencies regarding the benefits of masonry
- Develops a strategy to share relevant industry information to all industry stakeholders – such as news articles, legislation, work opportunities, etc.
- Monitors and analyzes sales and marketing activity against goals
Community Outreach/Career Promotion
- Manages all aspects of talent attraction marketing campaigns and programs, including events and programming
- Works with other recruiters, managers and supervisors on recruiting efforts, which include job fairs and career days
- Facilitates and manages CTE school outreach program promotional and recruitment efforts including masonry hands-on showcases
- Develops and monitors all budgets relevant to talent development and attraction
Miscellaneous
- Keeps an inventory at all times of all promotional items purchased, given away and or distributed
- Keeps an exact, specific and detailed expense log indicating all expenses incurred on behalf of UMI, to be submitted at the time the expenses are incurred
- Keeps an exact, specific and detailed expense log relating to business automobile use; indicating trip records, mileage records
- Prepares a written report of activities to be presented at Board meetings
- Other duties as assigned
Education & Experience
Bachelor’s degree and experience in a sales or marketing role preferred; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Association experience and construction industry knowledge/background helpful.
