JOB TITLE: Animal Care Attendant
HOURS: Full Time, Weekends Required
BASIC FUNCTION:
Performs all necessary work in maintaining the health and welfare of shelter animals and facility. Keeps exam rooms, kennels, halls and related areas of the shelter in a clean, sanitary and safe condition at all times. Ensures laundry, dishes, trash, stocking and related areas are maintained to the highest standard. Provides humane handling, training, exercise and enrichment for all shelter animals assuring that all animal care needs are met on a daily basis.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Responsible for all duties related to the humane care of shelter animals and facility.
- Assists in receiving and admitting animals upon intake. Assures proper identification materials is on each kennel upon arrival and animals receive the appropriate housing and care upon arrival.
- Maintains that animals receive proper food, clean water, bedding and a sanitary environment at all times.
- Observes animals for sickness, infestations, injuries and behavior changes and reports and documents symptoms and observations to appropriate personnel.
- Continually inspects holding areas and spot cleans cages and runs when needed throughout the day.
- Assists with inventory and restocking supplies as needed.
- Runs errands and transports animals as needed. Cleans and sanitizes vehicles and equipment used in transporting animals when needed.
- Bathes, grooms, provides care, exercise, training and enrichment for animals as needed.
- Participates in staff meetings, in-house service trainings and attends educational meetings as requested.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Skill in humane animal handling and restraint. Ability to interpret animal body language and react appropriately.
2. Knowledge of safe work habits and routine sanitation methods.
3. Skill in humane animal grooming techniques.
4. Ability to safely handle cleaning chemicals, agents and equipment.
5. Knowledge of basic custodial and remedial care of dogs and cats.
6. Ability to identify suspected signs of illness.
7. Ability to identify common animal breeds along with a basic understanding of breed characteristics and behaviors.
8. Ability to comprehend and follow oral and written instructions and communicate effectively in writing and orally.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Substantial lifting and carrying necessary at times. Must be able to stoop, bend, and lift overhead on a frequent basis and perform duties regularly associated with heavy cleaning. Must be able to control any personal allergic reactions to animals.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Exposure to high noise levels, odors, animal bites and scratches, diseases transferable between animals and humans, cleaning agents, insect/parasite controlling chemicals, slippery floors, dust, animal dander and excreta, injured animals, euthanasia, and staff and customer emotional extremes.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE and TRAINING:
High school diploma or equivalent desired, but not necessary. Experience handling animals very desirable. Must have a valid driver’s license.
