Terracon is currently looking for qualified technicians to support our transportation focused team on projects throughout the Charlotte metro area of North Carolina. As a Transportation Construction Services Technician with Terracon, you will work with a group of technicians and inspectors to provide soil engineering and materials inspection and testing services focused on large earthwork and concrete placement operations.

General Responsibilities:
Perform field testing, observation, and inspection of construction materials. Communicate with project manager, engineering technicians, client representative, contractor’s representative and others as applicable regarding the construction site, project requirements; and testing, observation, and inspection requirements and results. Transport material samples with associated identifying documentation to the laboratory for further testing and analysis. Tabulate, prepare, and submit data and observation in the form of written and digital reports as work is performed for daily transmittal to the Terracon Project Manager. Maintain and clean equipment, vehicles and work areas. May assist with scheduling and dispatch of Technicians to project sites. Adhere to strict safety standards.

Essential Roles and Responsibilities:
· Ability to read and interpret project plans, contract specifications, apply mathematical formulas and engineering principles.
· Evaluate site and subgrade conditions on construction projects and provide recommendations based on findings and project specifications.
· Assist in oversight of contractor’s structural fill management plan.
· Understanding of soil classifications and experience with understanding how the material’s moisture content impacts compaction.
· Performs testing, observation, and inspection as directed in accordance with training and the specified procedures.
· Perform field materials testing of soils, including proctors, soil density and moisture testing.
· Utilize a nuclear gauge to perform soil testing.
· Sampling and testing of concrete, including air content, unit weight and slump.
· Provides clear documentation of findings and results.
· Performs basic analysis of data to verify accuracy before communication and submittal to the Project Manager.
· Communicates information in a professional manner.
· Maintains assigned equipment and related calibration.
· Follows safety rules and practices and other safety requirements for all projects. Performs pre-task planning prior to executing work. Report any safety issues or concerns to management.
· Be responsible for maintaining quality standards on all projects.
· Ability and willingness to work day, and/or night shifts, and/or flexible schedules as required.
· Ability to sit, stand, climb, bend, twist or stoop frequently and for prolonged periods, under various outside conditions.
· Ability to reach horizontally as well as vertically for required tasks.
· Ability to use construction or inspection safety equipment including fall protection.
· Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and shake up to 20 pounds.
Requirements:
· High school diploma or equivalent, AAS Civil Engineering Technology preferred.
· Minimum 2 years of relevant experience or the equivalent in training and related experience.
· A degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or Civil Engineering Technology from an ABET accredited university may be substituted for experience.
· Experience with laptop computer use and Microsoft Word and Excel
· ACI Level I Concrete Field-Testing Technician, ICC and/or NCDOT certifications in the disciplines of reinforced concrete and earthwork are a plus.
· Certified in radiation safety and Nuclear Density Gauge operation.
· Successful completion of related internal safety certifications.
· Valid driver’s license and clean driving record
Preferred Certifications:
Certifications in one or more of the following areas:
· NCDOT: Conventional Density, Concrete Field, QMS Density Gauge, QMS Roadway, ABC Nuclear Density
· NICET Level II certification in Construction Materials Testing in one or more of the following categories: Soils, Concrete, Asphalt
· NICET Level II certification in Geotechnical in one or more of the following categories: Construction, Laboratory, Exploration, Generalist
· ICC certification in one or more of the following categories: Reinforced Concrete, Soils Special Inspector
Other national, regional, state, and local Materials related certifications requiring experience and written examination will also be considered if deemed appropriate by the Terracon Department Manager.
