Minimum Qualifications:
The Infusion Nurse must have a good understanding of standard oncology care practices. They need to be an advocate for patient safety and protocol integrity, adhere to nursing standards, and communicate effectively to ensure the effective conduct of clinical trials and quality patient care.
- They should have a current Virginia Registered Nursing License and be proficient in IV and venous access device management skills.
- They should have experience in Chemotherapy/Biotherapy administration and current BLS/ACLS certification. ACLS certification is preferred, and OCN certification is desirable.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Oncology Care Practices
- They should demonstrate knowledge of age-specific differences in the patient population, including physiological and developmental differences unique to each group.
- They should assess and monitor therapy of patients using appropriate technical skills under the direction and supervision of a physician.
- They should assist physicians with exams and procedures, maintain efficient and appropriate patient flow, and demonstrate knowledge of reimbursement procedures and charge capture.
- They should perform venipuncture, access implanted ports, and maintain central venous access devices and alternate delivering systems.
- They should document all elements of care, communicate all pertinent information and any interventions to the physician or mid-level provider, and serve as a resource person to the medical assistants and LPNs.
- They should triage patient/family phone calls as needed and document relevant information in the patient's chart, assess patient/family needs, provide teaching, and demonstrate awareness of community resources available to patients and assist with referrals if necessary.
- They should follow OSHA guidelines when handling cytotoxic agents, biohazardous waste and any other material potentially infected with a blood-borne pathogen.
- They should maintain current knowledge of oncology nursing by participating in ongoing educational opportunities, professional development activities, and maintaining professional affiliations.
- They should maintain patient confidentiality and serve as mentor/preceptor and provide day-to-day supervision and guidance to other nursing staff.
Oncology Clinical Trial Practices
- The informed consent must be documented before any study-specific tasks are performed.
- Patients requiring increased nursing assessment and management, in addition to the clinical trial requirements, must be identified and the healthcare team must collaborate to ensure patient safety.
- Patient education must be provided regarding the required study procedures.
- The patient's adherence to and documentation of self-administered protocol agents, diaries, and return of such agents must be evaluated and educated.
- Collaborating with the investigator to determine if any treatment schedule or drug dose modification is necessary and communicating findings to the study team and other care providers.
- Ensuring appropriate communication between research and clinical staff related to patient-specific care needs. This may include telephone contact.
- Ensuring evidence-based symptom management as permitted by the protocol.
- Administering investigational compounds and/or chemotherapy/biotherapy to patients according to the protocol and applicable regulations.
- Performing study-required procedures such as routine lab collection, study-specific sample collection, vital signs, and ECGs, according to the protocol-defined timeline.
- Recording all study procedures, including vital signs, ECGs, blood draws, infusions, and infusion reactions. This may include collecting and documenting current medication lists.
