JOB SUMMARY:
The City of Hampton is accepting applications for a full-time Street Laborer. This position is responsible for the maintenance, repair, and upkeep of City streets and sidewalks; patching potholes; loading and unloading of stone, gravel, dirt, asphalt, pipe, timber, and heavy mechanical equipment; assisting in semi-skilled work by handling tools, carrying or lifting lumber, commercial trash, debris, and brush and all other duties as required.
POSITION CONTEXT:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to sit, stand, talk, and operate multiple types of equipment in varying degrees of temperature for an extended period of time.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
▪ Cleans and maintains City streets, sidewalks, and grounds
▪ Patches potholes and performs other tasks in repairing streets
▪ Loads and unloads asphalt, dirt, gravel, pipe, stone, and heavy mechanical equipment
▪ Assists in semi-skilled work by handling tools, carrying or lifting lumber, mixing or placing cement and asphalt, and performing simple repairs or running errands
▪ Assists in the installation of storm pipes and construction of catch basins
▪ Collects and disposes of debris, trash, and general clean-up after work has been completed
▪ Cuts grass around public buildings and right-of-ways
▪ Operates weed eater and other ground maintenance equipment
▪ Collects residential and commercial trash, debris, and brush as necessary
▪ Repairs and maintains City sewer lines and landscapes
▪ Inspects hydrants as needed
▪ Installs required street signs
▪ Assists with the preparation, setup, and clean-up of City events and festivals as needed
▪ Assists other departments in Public Works and all other duties as required
▪ Completes work in a timely manner; following up on results.

▪ Ability to effectively handle citizen concerns when approached while being professional and courteous
▪ Ability to relay information from the immediate supervisor to other crew members in a professional manner.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
▪ Demonstrates ability to work independently with minimal supervision while exercising good judgment and initiative
▪ Ability to develop and maintain collaborative working relationships with all levels of staff, other departments, and general public
▪ Ability to multi-task and work under pressure with constant interruptions and within short timeframes
▪ Must be able to gain knowledge of City and departmental policies and procedures
▪ Must follow safety rules and regulations
▪ Must be aware of occupational hazards, safety standards, and exercise best practices
▪ Must have strong verbal and written communication skills, using English language
▪ Ability to understand, follow verbal and written instructions, and respond to questions from internal and external sources
▪ Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
▪ Knowledge of general record-keeping tasks and terminology, procedures, and equipment
▪ Excellent customer service skills, including tact and common courtesy
▪ Knowledge of modern office procedures, methods and computer equipment
▪ Must have the ability to maintain professional composure and take reasonable action when confronted with difficult situations
▪ Ability to work effectively as a team player, take initiative, and make constructive recommendations to improve overall departmental efficiency
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
▪ High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
Experience:
▪ Minimum one year of experience and/or training
