Surveyor Trainer
Job Description and Duties
Job Summary:
The Survey Trainer is responsible for ensuring health care facility surveyors are capable and competent to provide survey services at the time of hire, provide retraining if concerns are identified after hire, and be part of performance evaluations for surveyors.
Duty Statement:
Evaluates newly hired surveyors for training needs prior to beginning surveyor role. This may include surveyors with current experience, surveyors who have past survey experience but not currently surveying, and new staff with no survey experience or training.
Sets a training plan for newly hired surveyors to include QSEP videos, CertiSurv training videos, and live webinars as needed.
Complete online orientation to review CertiSurv policies, processes, and expectations prior to onsite evaluation.
Onsite evaluations of surveyors during the training period, generally covering multiple surveys, until the trainer has a satisfactory evaluation that the surveyor can work independently.
Train surveyors on areas including regulations, investigation planning, citation writing, principles of documentation, intake summaries, file organization, and supporting evidence.
Collaborate with the QA and Survey Supervisor teams to identify current surveyors who need follow up training or evaluations.
Create training materials including training videos for identified needs.
Perform onsite evaluations for current surveyors as part of an annual review.
Be available for questions from surveyors during or after surveys.
Attends training sessions and staff meetings offered by Federal and State officials and CertiSurv.
Cover weekend on-call on a rotating schedule.
Participate in staff meetings including presenting training topics.
Monitor tracking of surveyors’ mandatory training courses.
Serve as back up for pre-exit debriefings, as needed.
Plan and conduct periodic spot review of onsite surveys, which might include oversight surveys.
Desirable Qualifications:
Strong knowledge of regulations governing health facilities. The ability to accurately interpret and apply regulations and standards is crucial.
Highly skilled investigator and citation writer. Low occurrence of citation dismissal and minimal QA revisions.
Proficient in, and desire to uphold, CMS, state survey agency, and CertiSurv standards and expectations.
Transparent, honest, and respectful of others. Takes responsibility for actions, acknowledges and recognize mistakes, and uses the experience to grow.

Experience in surveying multiple facility types.
Work Environment:
Extensive travel is required for training and evaluations in the facility setting. Non travel time would be spent in office completing reports or providing remote trainings.
Excellent knowledge of Office, Outlook, and Teams products will be necessary. The Survey Trainer will be the first line of trouble shooting technical issues while onsite.
Hours worked will sometimes be outside of normal business hours as surveyors work in different time zones and may work any day of the week.
Hiring Requirements:
Minimum of 5 years’ experience as a long-term care surveyor. Must have passed the Surveyor’s Minimum Qualifications Test (SMQT).
Strong writing and grammar skills. Strong communication skills.
Registered Nurse with a current and valid license as a registered nurse, issued by a state board of nursing, without limitations or restrictions.
Experience in training and evaluation performance, preferably related to health care surveys.
Supervisor:
The Surveyor Trainer will report to the Training Coordinator.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $90,000.00 - $110,000.00 per year
