Specific Responsibilities
The Special Education Teacher is an instructional teacher who works with small groups and one-on-one with students to support individualized instruction.
- Reports to the Director of Special Education and Principal
- Plans and provides differentiated instruction for all students as defined in the students’ Individualized Education Plans (IEP) with a particular focus on testing grades
- Completes necessary reports and record keeping on each student, under the direction of the Director of Special Education
- Works cooperatively with regular classroom teacher communicating specific student needs and assisting students in specific content area needs
- Maximizes student achievement, especially for those identified for special education and those at risk of being identified for special education by implementing a response to intervention instructional model
- Uses information and data from a variety of sources to understand students’ instructional needs and to improve teaching and learning for young children
- Supports the development and implementation of students’ Individual Education Plans (IEP) and evaluates students’ progress towards Individual Education Plan (IEP) goals.
- Uses various techniques to promote learning. Teaching methods can include intensive individualized instruction, problem-solving assignments, and small-group work
- Ensures that appropriate testing accommodations are provided, such as having material read orally or lengthening the time allowed to take the test
- Designs and teaches appropriate curriculum and assigns work geared toward each student’s needs and abilities
- Performs other duties, as deemed appropriate, by the Principal or Director of Special Education
Qualifications
- Minimum of a Master’s degree in Special Education required
- Minimum of three years teaching in an urban public school or charter school setting
- Experience with Response to Intervention (RTI) model
- Belief in and alignment with Manhattan Charter School’s core beliefs and educational philosophy
