The Combination Pipe Welder is responsible for welding and assembling metal components and piping systems for various industrial, commercial, and residential applications. This role involves interpreting blueprints, plans, and specifications to ensure precise and high-quality welds. The Combination Pipe Welder must adhere to safety standards and industry regulations while performing their duties efficiently and effectively.
Key Responsibilities:
- Welding and Fabrication:
- Perform various types of welding, including TIG, MIG, and stick welding, on different metals such as carbon steel, stainless steel, and alloy steels.
- Weld pipe joints in different positions (horizontal, vertical, overhead) ensuring high-quality and strong welds.
- Fabricate and assemble piping systems and components according to blueprints and specifications.
- Installation and Maintenance:
- Install and align pipes, valves, fittings, and other piping system components.
- Inspect completed welds and installations to ensure they meet specifications and standards.
- Perform preventive maintenance and repairs on piping systems as needed.
- Reading and Interpreting Blueprints:
- Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and detailed drawings to understand project requirements and specifications.
- Calculate dimensions and tolerances, ensuring proper fit-up and alignment of piping systems.
- Safety and Compliance:
- Adhere to all safety protocols and regulations to ensure a safe working environment.
- Use personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow safety procedures to protect against welding hazards.
- Ensure all work complies with relevant codes, standards, and industry regulations.
- Quality Control:
- Conduct visual and non-destructive testing (NDT) of welds to ensure quality and integrity.
- Maintain high standards of workmanship, ensuring welds are clean, precise, and free from defects.
- Document and report any defects or issues encountered during welding and fabrication.
- Tool and Equipment Management:
- Maintain and manage welding tools and equipment, ensuring they are in good working condition.
- Keep an inventory of welding materials, tools, and supplies, and report any shortages or issues to supervisors.
- Ensure that all tools and equipment are used safely and properly.
Qualifications:
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent; completion of a formal apprenticeship program or technical school training in welding.
- Experience: Minimum of 3-5 years of experience as a pipe welder in an industrial setting.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in various welding techniques (TIG, MIG, stick welding), strong understanding of welding principles, metallurgy, and pipefitting techniques. Ability to read and interpret blueprints and welding symbols.
- Certifications: Relevant welding certifications, such as AWS (American Welding Society) or ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) certifications, are highly desirable.
- Physical Requirements: Ability to work in various environments, including confined spaces, heights, and adverse weather conditions. Physical strength and stamina to perform tasks that involve lifting, standing, and manual dexterity.
