To successfully achieve these goals it is vital to address the social and emotional health of our students. The school counselor will implement a comprehensive, school counseling program aligned with the school's purpose, vision and mission.
Purpose of the School Guidance Counselor
The school guidance counselor supports the spiritual, academic, social, and emotional development of the students. They provide guidance and counseling services to help children cope with various issues, develop positive behavior and social skills, and foster a supportive learning environment. Additionally, they collaborate with teachers, parents, and administrators to address individual student needs, promote positive relationships, and enhance overall student well-being.
Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in School Counseling or related field.
- Florida State certification - School Counselor.
- School guidance counselor experience preferred.
- Pass a background check.
- Must be able to establish and maintain social skills and be willing to utilize social groups.
- Must adhere to confidentiality and HIPAA parameters.
- Must be self-motivated and be able to organize, prioritize, and multi-task.
- Must have strong ethical values and be able to exercise good judgment.
- Demonstrates the ability to design, implement, analyze, and document outcomes of a comprehensive school counseling program based on national and state standards.
- Demonstrates the ability to support student achievement, social/emotional development, and next grade level readiness.
- Abides by the American School Counselor Association’s Ethical Standards for School Counselors.
- Demonstrates the ability to work with diverse groups and be skilled in conflict resolution.
- Demonstrates the ability to effectively communicate, both orally and in writing.
- Demonstrates knowledge of technology and software applications appropriate to job responsibilities.
Duties and Responsibilities
Spiritual Guidance & General Student Counseling
- Provide spiritual support and guidance to students. This may involve helping students understand and apply Christian principles to their lives, fostering spiritual growth, and addressing moral and ethical dilemmas from a Christian perspective.
- Implement a school counseling core curriculum, individual counseling and student planning, classroom lessons, small group counseling, and preventative and responsive services.
- Use school data to identify and assist individual students who do not perform at grade level and do not have opportunities and resources to be successful in school.
- Support the continuum of mental health services, including prevention and tiered intervention strategies, and collaborate with school-based and community mental health providers to enhance student success.
Character Education
- Implement Character education programs rooted in Christian values such as compassion, forgiveness, integrity, and service. Counselors may lead discussions, activities, or service projects that reinforce these values and promote positive character development among students.
- Deliver programs that promote students’ development of essential mindsets and behavior standards including, learning skills, social skills, and self-management skills.
Integration of Faith and Learning
Collaborate with teachers and administrators to integrate Christian faith perspectives into the academic curriculum and school activities. Counselors may assist in planning and implementing religious education programs, chapel services, or special events that reinforce the school's Christian identity and mission.
Family and Community Outreach
- Engage with families, church members, and the broader Christian community to strengthen connections and support the holistic development of students. This may involve facilitating parent education workshops, partnering with local Christian churches or organizations, and fostering a sense of community among students and families.
- Foster family and community partnerships to support the social/emotional and academic development of all students.
- Collaborate with parents and teachers to provide workshops and recommendations to address specific student challenges.
Crisis Intervention from a Faith Perspective
Provide spiritual and emotional support to students, staff, and families during times of crisis or adversity. Counselors may offer prayer, scripture readings, or pastoral care to help individuals cope with challenges and find comfort in their faith.
Promotion of Christian Service and Mission
Encourage students to engage in acts of service, charity, and mission outreach inspired by Christian values of love and compassion. Counselors may facilitate service-learning opportunities, mission trips, or community service projects that empower students to make a positive difference in the world.
Collaboration with Church and School Leaders
- Work closely with Advent pastors and church leaders to support the spiritual formation and well-being of students. Counselors may coordinate joint activities, seek guidance on theological matters, or facilitate communication between the school and the church community.
- Work with administration, pastors, students, teachers, parents, and school nurse to address student social and emotional issues, address barriers to student learning and to close the achievement/opportunity gap using Christian values as a framework and resource for their work.
- Provide referrals for additional assistance and consultation/collaboration with parents, teachers and administrators to create a learning environment promoting educational equity, access, and success for every student.
- Effectively communicate safety and security concerns with administration and security.
Additional Duties
- Provide student supervision during student arrival, lunch, and student dismissal.
- Provide classroom coverage as needed.
- Provide counseling support as needed to Advent Early Childhood School.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the school principal.
- Perform other duties as listed in the employee’s most current commitment letter.

Pay: $34.00 - $43.00 per hour
