ORGANIZATION: Weston United Community Renewal Inc. is a not for profit organization located in Harlem, New York. For over 30 years, Weston United has provided housing and supportive services to participants with histories of chronic homelessness, mental illness, and substance abuse. Weston United employs over 100 employees who contribute to a rich and diverse work environment.
Essential Position Functions:
- Performs restorative services and ADL's to assist clients with cooking, cleaning, general apartment maintenance, shopping, traveling, taking medication, symptom management, personal hygiene, money management, self-advocacy, utilizing community resources and other areas as appropriate; escorts clients to outside appointments throughout the community utilizing public transportation to obtain benefits, medical doctor, psychiatrist or dentist when necessary, shopping, etc.; timely completion of required documentation for every client contact as per agency policy. Ensure documentation meets regulatory guidelines for level of care.
- Co-facilitate groups if requested in areas including but not limited to wellness, leadership, housing, stability, employment and education, relationships, and healthy decision making; provide crisis intervention, as necessary; ability to work with consumers/residents, families, and staff in a caring and respectful manner, and with due understanding of and consideration for cultural differences; conduct apartment inspections if requested on multiple floors, utilizing stairs; immediately reports serious incidents, serious incident allegations, incidents, or sensitive situations to supervisors; provide an environment where clients have the ability to and are comfortable accessing services at any time of day or night. All shifts in residential community residences and any other 24-hour supervised program are "awake" shifts. That means that employees are expected to be alert and available at all times for the purposes of managing any client matters that arise and to provide building coverage; attend staff meetings, supervision and trainings as required, any other duties as may be assigned.
Educational Requirements: The Peer Specialist will have had lived experience with a mental illness diagnosis, the completion of a Peer Advocacy Program preferred. Willingness to share some aspects of lived experience. High school or GED required. Associates preferred.
Qualifications and Experience: Experience working with mental health, crisis intervention and managing trauma triggered behavior. Excellent time management skills; stress resistant, flexible; team player; open to feedback; creative; excellent organizational skills; willingness to perform CPR/First Aid/AED/CPI/Naloxone. Preferred knowledge of AWARDS.
