Position Summary
The Environmental Health and Safety Coordinator will manage the organization’s health and safety programs. Environmental Health and Safety Coordinator will be responsible for conducting safety inspections of all MWA locations, facilities training for new and existing employees, lead safety committees, participate in team huddles. Environmental Health and Safety Coordinator will ensure that environmental and safety regulations are being met.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:
- Knowledge of Safety, Occupational Health, and Industrial Hygiene principles, practices, procedures, and regulations applicable to the performance of the full range of complex safety and Occupational Health management responsibilities.
- Responsible for the preparation and maintenance of environmental, health and safety plans, procedures, and manuals.
- Ability to identify, evaluate and control a wide range of safety and occupational health conditions and risk factors.
- Preparation of written procedures and programs for implementation of safety, environmental, industrial hygiene, and occupational health policies.
- Development of specialized operating procedures for workplace safety and occupational health.
- Development of training plans for employees in fields of workplace safety and health; Providing training needs for all employees for workplace environmental/safety and occupational health needs, including onboarding and incident follow-up needs.
- Under general direction, ensures timely processing of workers' compensation claims; evaluates accident reports to determine accuracy and completeness and to ensure adequate investigation; provides training and guidance to claims coordinators in all departments.
- Advises and/or assists departments in conducting investigation of accident reports, including interviewing of witnesses and procurement of relevant documentation.
- Reviews accident reports to identify patterns of injury and to determine whether unsafe conditions contributed to the accident; advises departments of trends in injuries and proper safety procedures that may result in reduction of injuries; provides department with information that will aid in reducing accidents and improve safety.
- Provides guidance on environmental technology and compliance.
- Perform inspections of workplace for hazards, occupational safety, and fire code violations.
- Performs accident investigations that fall within Environmental Health and Safety (EHS).
- Perform inspections of facilities for safety and fire protection measures making recommendations and follow-up inspections when necessary to assure compliance.
- Lead safety committees throughout the organization.
- Investigate alleged adverse incidents involving regulated materials, machinery or other items that have an impact on employee safety or occupational health reporting findings and making recommendations.
- Review of proposed/required corrective actions to ensure accomplishment of hazard abatement.
- Maintain and manage OSHA 300 reporting and recording needs.
- Manage PPE program, DOT program and drug testing program, Lockout/Tagout Program, Emergency Action Plan Program, Hearing Conservation Program, etc.
- Supports the Compliance Coordinator, acting as a back-up, as needed.

Travel
- This position requires frequent travel in and around the Des Moines metro area to support all Metro Waste Authority facilities.
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Safety, Occupational Safety and Health, or related field
- 3 - 5 years related experience in Safety, OSHA Compliance, Industrial Safety, or related area
- Valid driver’s license

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to use hands or fingers; handle or feel objects, tools, or controls. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.
Work Environment
This job operates at the landfill, compost center, and transfer station locations. These locations are subject to potential hazards, including odor, dust, moving machinery, and extreme temperatures. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

Pay: $63,000.00 - $95,200.00 per year
