Position Title: Peer Support Specialist
Department: Residential Services
Report to: Lead Counselor
Salary Range: $20.00 - $24.00
Type: Full Time, Non-Exempt
Position Summary
The Peer Support Specialist assists clients on their recovery journey to develop and accomplish goals through supportive case management and recovery services. Incumbents educate clients about recovery principles, serve as role models, support, and validate client experiences, and empower clients to achieve health and wellness. Recovery support services include coaching, mentoring, and other support to address emotional, informational, transportation, and other needs to support recovery goals.
Essential Functions
· Facilitate individual peer support groups and sessions in a residential setting.
· Complete Peer Support Plan for each resident that enters treatment.
· Provide orientation to clients participating in residential treatment services.
· Engage clients to achieve health management goals using recovery coaching, motivational interviewing, and problem-solving techniques.
· Coordinate with case management to address unmet needs, which may include housing, food, clothing, and financial assistance.
· Provide continuous engagement and follow up with clients after discharge to ensure a successful transition to the community and ensure continued progress toward recovery goals.
· Help resolve interpersonal issues between and among residents.
· Accompany clients to appointments as needed, transport clients to and from medical appointments, sober support meetings, and life enrichment activities.
· Report issues that endanger the safety or wellbeing of clients or colleagues to the program manager.
· Will attend all internal meetings, and complete all training as required in a residential setting.
· Maintain confidentiality and privacy standards of client protected health information and other information and materials in accordance with agency policies and procedures, and applicable regulations and laws according to HIPAA.
· Supervise residents enforcing program rules and regulations.
· Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
· High school diploma or equivalent.
· Active in Peer Support Specialist Training at time of application.
· Cultural competency in working with LGBTQI+ communities.
· Knowledge of crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques.
· Knowledge of recovery principles and practices.
· Knowledge of harm reduction principles and practices.
· Knowledge of behavioral health system of care.
· Knowledge of housing resources, sober support resources.
· Knowledge of trauma-informed principles and practices.
· Current CPR/First Aid Certification (or within 90 days of hire).
· Strong verbal communication skills.
· Ability to work independently and in a group setting.
· Ability to handle multiple tasks and shifting priorities within a residential setting.
· Ability to work productively in a fast-paced environment.
· Excellent time management skills.
· Ability to complete tasks in a timely manner according to program expectations.
· Ability to meet deadlines with documentation according to state, county, and program requirements.
· Ability to use basic typing skills, comfort with computer and use of technology.
· Ability to work flexible hours - days, nights, and weekends as needed for a residential setting.
· Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
· Successful completion of a criminal background check.
Preferred Qualifications
· Active Peer Support Specialist certification.
· 1 to 2 years’ experience serving clients in a human service setting.
· Previous experience working in an AOD residential program setting.
· Experience with Optum – SUDPOH county forms used for AOD documentation.
· Written and spoken bilingual fluency in Spanish and English.
Environmental Factors and Conditions/Physical Requirements
· While primarily working indoors, counselors also work with clients outdoors.
· Holiday, evening, and weekend work may be required.
· Transporting residents to and from activities and or appointments.
