Rafiki Coalition’s mission is to eliminate health inequities in San Francisco’s Black and marginalized communities through education, advocacy, and by providing holistic health and wellness services in a culturally affirming environment.
Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Director of Development & Communications is responsible for the management and growth of the development, marketing, public relations and volunteer operations of Rafiki. Essential duties include management of the department, staff supervision and training, planning and evaluation of department operations, budget development and monitoring and continuous quality assessment. The Director of Development and Communications serves as a senior manager of the organization and supervises the department’s staff.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Development
- In concert with the Executive Director, develop long and short-term fundraising, marketing and communications plans and strategies.
- Develop and guide implementation of fundraising campaigns, including annual fund giving, major giving, capital funding, corporate sponsorships, foundation grants and special events.
- Implement strategies to build individual donor and major donor gifts
- Build and nurture constituent relations; coordinate the Executive Director and Board of Directors involvement in cultivating and soliciting donors.
- Draft appeal letters and foundation proposals, acknowledgments, and other donor communications
- Aligns strong volunteer leadership behind the development effort.
- Managing donor database and files. Developing summary reports to be used to manage effort and communicate with the Executive Director and Board of Directors.
- Develop fundraising marketing materials.
- Calendar and prepare reports to foundations and other funders
- Establish schedule, solicit sponsors/hosts, and coordinate logistics of annual events and smaller fundraising events
- In concert with the Executive Director, staff the Fundraising Committee of the Board
Marketing & Public Relations
- Coordinate all marketing, communications, advertising, and public relations on behalf of BCA
- In concert with the Executive Director, work with coalitions to strengthen cohesion and promote efficiency
DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT & COMMUNICATIONS
through shared, values-based messages designed to achieve clearly identified communications goals
- In concert with the Executive Director, strategically select, develop and maintain close working relationships with partner organizations including coalitions, interest groups representing diverse constituencies and individual issue experts.
- Coordinate all print and electronic materials
- Develop marketing materials and opportunities to increase agency visibility
- Develop and implement media campaigns and media education projects to meet the BCA organizational mission
- Prepare media outreach materials such as press releases, background briefings, fact sheets, opinion pieces and editorial board letters
- Coordinate annual report, brochure and other agency publications
- Coordinate website content development and manage website maintenance
Volunteer Operations
- Plan and implement multiple recruiting efforts to assure an adequate pool of volunteers are available to meet the agency’s needs for volunteers
- Design and implement training program to familiarize volunteers with BCA’s mission, values, policies and procedures.
- Develop and maintain a volunteer handbook containing expectations for volunteer participation.
- Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree with emphasis in communications or marketing or at least five years experience in fund development, communications and volunteer management.
- Excellent understanding of principles and techniques of development activities, including annual giving, major giving, planned giving, event planning, capital campaigns, marketing and communications.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to “think outside the box” to help develop communication materials for fund development and programs
- Ability to develop and manage a communication/marketing plan for a community-based organization dedicated to helping an under-served population
- Self-starter with strong written, verbal, and interpersonal skills and ability to set priorities and be self-directed
- PC literate; proficiency in Word, Excel, and donor management applications
- Must be able to communicate effectively with diverse groups and have a keen understanding of the HIV / AIDS Arena

Pay: $100,000.00 - $135,000.00 per year
