Position Overview
Ensure that contract specifications are met for steel fabrication and that required welding codes are followed by means of dimensional and visual inspection.
Perform all facets of inspection; evaluate materials, processes, and workmanship to assure compliance with procedures as well as applicable specifications, provisions, and codes.
Job Functions
- Perform dimensional and visual inspection of parts, sub-assemblies, assemblies, processes, and final product.
- Perform part inspection, in-process inspection, and final inspection of fabrication processes and finished product.
- Perform inspection of incoming raw materials and other purchased materials.
- Document and identify material by heat number.
- Ensure steel fabrications are acceptable per the approved shop drawings by checking parts and assemblies for dimensional accuracy.
- Visually inspect welds.
- Document and report all non-conformities found during in-process or final inspection.
- Communicate with management and shop floor employees in a professional manner.
- Suggest remediation of ongoing quality issues; instruct welders to improve deficiencies and correct issues.
- Ensure that welders are certified to applicable standards.
- Test welders and submit test coupons for certification.
- Oversee all types of testing for specific projects and/or customers; i.e. hydrostatic, smoke, dye penetrant, etc.
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
- Good overall knowledge of steel fabrication practices and procedures, and good knowledge of applicable codes and specifications (AISC, AWS, etc.).
- Ability to work without supervision; possess superior initiative and ambition.
- Ability to pass an AWS D1.1 1” unlimited 2G FCAW weld test.
- Ability to fabricate (fit/weld) structural, platework and miscellaneous material per standards and applicable codes.
- Ability to operate forklifts, jib cranes, and overhead cranes in order to move materials.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Must be able to read and interpret fabrication drawings and other documents.
- Must be able to visually inspect parts and assemblies dimensionally.
- Must be able to document and communicate inspection results.
- Must be able to lift 50 pounds without injury.
- Must be able to fluently read, write and speak English language.
- Must be able to take and transfer digital photographs.
- Two years experience in steel fabrication inspection.
- Demonstrate a positive attitude and initiative.
Other Skills/Abilities
- Steel cleaning and painting knowledge is a plus.
- AWS Certified Welding Inspector certification is a plus.
