*GENERAL STATEMENT *(Summary of Duties and Responsibilities)
Responsibility for day-to-day activities related to recovering organs for transplant, including but not limited to potential donor referrals, donor evaluation, authorization process, and comprehensive donor management. Activities include, but are not limited to, being knowledgeable of individual hospital and OPTN policies related to the donation of all anatomical gifts; able to identify key personnel who are capable of improving and maintaining a hospital's level of participation in facilitating potential organ and tissue donors; and performing activities related to the initial and surgical recovery elements of the donation process. Advancing level responsibilities include facilitating donor management strategies on behalf of Southwest Transplant Alliance, advanced donor management strategies and invasive procedures. The position will also facilitate the general activities required throughout the donor recovery period under the direction of the medical director, clinical management team, and the lead recovery surgeon present in the operating room.
*Organ Recovery Coordinator *
*ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: *
1. Provides on-call coverage for organ and tissue donation.
2. Provides assessment of organ and tissue donors. Develops, implements, and evaluates a comprehensive plan of care for complex patients to achieve successful organ and tissue donation under guidance of preceptor.
3. Provides input and assists in the facilitation of the referral/donor process, and the organ recovery process using knowledge of critical care principles such as hemodynamic monitoring, ventilator management, and administration of critical care medications under guidance of preceptor.
4. Completes required organ and/or tissue donor documentation in a timely manner under guidance of preceptor.
5. Obtain authorization and medical social history screening of organ and tissue donors, as needed under guidance of preceptor.
6. Applies age-specific patient management for heart, liver, kidney, pancreas, small intestine, and lung donors under guidance of preceptor.
7. Allocates organs in compliance with STA and OPTN policy under guidance of preceptor.
8. Assists the Surgical Services Coordinators in the operating room with organ preservation and organ labeling & packaging under guidance of preceptor.
9. Communicates with hospital services to ensure effective donor follow-up under guidance of preceptor.
10. Attends Designated Requestor training annually
11. Other duties as assigned. Independent Practice Organ Recovery Coordinator (Perform all expected job functions as assigned Provisional Organ Recovery Coordinator position. Must maintain requirements as an Independent Organ Recovery Coordinator, failure to do so will result in demotion to the previously achieved level.)
*Independent Practice Organ Recovery Coordinator*
1. Meets requirements for independent practice on all aspects of Organ Recovery Coordinator.
2. Other duties as assigned.
*Sr. Organ Recovery Coordinator*
(Perform all expected job functions as assigned Organ Recovery Coordinator position. Must achieve Independent Practice as Sr. ORC within 12 to 18 months, failure to do so will result in demotion to the previously achieved level. If staff have not achieved independent practice within 12 months, staff member must demonstrate progress toward achieving independent practice)
1. Participates in Quality initiatives annually
2. Achieve independent practice of placing arterial and central lines within 12 months of obtaining Sr. Organ Recovery Coordinator.
3. Provides work direction, coaching, and mentoring in clinical competencies to ORC and Independent ORC levels.
*Advanced Practice Organ Recovery Coordinator*
(Perform all expected job functions as assigned Sr. Organ Recovery Coordinator position. Must achieve Independent Practice as Advanced ORC within 12 to 18 months, failure to do so will result in demotion to the previously achieved level. If staff have not achieved independent practice within 12 months, staff member must demonstrate progress toward achieving independent practice)
1. Assists with interpretation of chest x-rays to guide donor management strategies.
2. Provides clinical support for interpretation of hemodynamic status and development of advanced donor management strategies.
3. Supports and assists with research initiatives approved by STA leadership.
4. Performs advanced procedures, including but not limited to bronchoscopy, percutaneous liver biopsy, and line placement.
5. Performs kidney pumping.
6. Preceptor for advanced skills such as line placement, bronchoscopy and liver biopsy.
7. Performs and / or assists with Supervisor On-Call job duties as needed.
*NON-ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: *
(These "non-essential job functions" represent job functions which the incumbent is responsible for performing. However, if necessary, these job functions could be performed by other personnel.)
1. Represent Southwest Transplant Alliance with national and regional procurement and transplant organizations.
2. Independently provides clinical training and education to hospital staff as requested by Hospital Services.
3. Collaborates with Hospital Services for death record review and hospital education as requested.
4. Works with hospitals, staff, and the public to assure that appropriate patients and families are provided the opportunity of organ and tissue donation.
*PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT / WORKING CONDITIONS: *
Normal office environment, travel in light and commercial aircraft, or automobile in order to meet all the duties and responsibilities of the position.
*OSHA CATEGORY DEFINITION:*
Category 1 - The incumbent in this position has potential for occupational exposure. EQUIPMENT USED: The incumbent is required to use various pieces of office equipment. Appropriate orientation to the equipment is provided.
