Position: Environmental Health Specialist

Description: This position is responsible for education, surveillance, consultation, and inspection
within Public Health environmental programming, while enforcing state, local and federal laws related to
programs. Environmental Health programming consists of On-site Wastewater management, Food and
Lodging, Private Water Supply, Tattoo Inspections, Public Swimming Pools, and Children's Environmental
Health which includes Lead Poisoning Prevention and investigations. The bulk of this position will
maintain duties in On-site Wastewater activities, such as conducting site evaluations for wastewater
systems, designing and permitting new systems, and issuing permits to repair wastewater systems.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities:
● Thorough knowledge of environmental health procedures, policies, statutes, and rules, as well as
job-specific program areas.
● Considerable knowledge of public health law, microbiology, biology, chemistry, food science,
epidemiology, soil science, and basic engineering technology as applied to environmental health
practices.
● Working knowledge of the interrelationship between socio-economic factors and environmental
health concerns.
● Ability to analyze and comprehend a wide variety of technical and administrative regulations,
records, and reports.
● Ability to exercise sound judgment and deal tactfully with a wide range of public contacts while
enforcing public health laws and regulations.
● Ability to apply environmental health standards, guidelines, statutes, rules, knowledge, and
techniques in the investigation of environmental health problems.
● Ability to plan, organize, and schedule work effectively.
● Ability to manage work tasks and schedule with minimal supervision.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Meets any of the following combinations of education and practice experience standards:
A. Bachelor's degree or a postgraduate degree from a program that is accredited by the National
Environmental Health Science and Protection Accreditation Council (EHAC); or
B. Bachelor’s degree or a postgraduate degree in public health and one year of experience in the
field of environmental health practice; or
C. Bachelor's degree or postgraduate degree with a minimum of 30 semester hours or 45 quarter
hours in the physical, biological, natural, life, or health sciences and one year of experience in the
field of environmental health practice.
May meet Trainee appointment if eligible for registration and applies for registration as an Environmental Health
Specialist Intern within 60 days of employment. Employee may remain registered as an Environmental Health
Specialist Intern until registration as an Environmental Health Specialist or up to two years, whichever comes first.
