Diverse Learner Teacher at Private School
City Elementary is a private school in Hyde Park that offers an individualized educational program tailored to students with diverse learning styles and developmental needs. Our classrooms are structured to provide small group instruction (6:1 student to teacher ration) for children on the autism spectrum, those with significant attentional issues, and those with sensory-integration challenges. City Elementary provides a rigorous academic education while simultaneously facilitating regulation, social engagement, and positive peer interactions.
Under the direction of the Head of School, the Special Education Teacher plans and provides for transformative learning experiences for students. The person in this position is responsible for working with our amazing team to implement curriculum and create a learning environment that provides specialized instruction for all students.
Special Education Teacher Essential Functions:
- Provide direct and indirect instructional support to students in a positive environment.
- Employ educational strategies and techniques during instruction to improve the development of sensory- and perceptual-motor skills, language, cognition, and executive functioning
- Instruct students in academic subjects using a variety of techniques such as multi-sensory, multi-modal, hands-on, child-centered, and project-based learning.
- Teach socially expected behaviors, as determined by the students’ individualized learning plan (ILP) by employing techniques in an overall positive behavioral support system.
- Modify curriculum for students based upon a variety of instructional techniques and technologies.
- Maintain a structured, distraction-free learning environment
- Plan and conduct activities for a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and work time that provides students with opportunities to observe, question, and investigate.
- Establish and enforce rules for behavior and procedures for maintaining an environment conducive to learning for all students.
- Collaborate with parents to discuss their children's progress and to determine priorities for their children and their individualized educational needs.
- Confer with parents, administrators, therapists, social workers, and other professionals to develop individualized learning plans (ILPs) designed to promote students' educational, physical, and social/emotional development.
- Maintain accurate and complete student records and prepare reports on children and activities
- Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects and communicate those objectives to students.
- Assist in collection of data for to validate classroom learning and provide appropriate classroom interventions
- Provide regular feedback and mentorship to teacher assistants
- Maintain professional competence by participating in staff development activities, curriculum development meetings, and other professional opportunities.
- Support integration opportunities with students in our partner school
Diverse Learner Teacher Qualifications:
- A degree/certification in Special Education or related field of study or equivalent job experience
- Several years experience in working with students with autism spectrum disorders or other diverse learners
- Experience in developing and implementing sensory, regulation, and behavior plans
- A collaborative style that welcomes input from parents and staff
