Ceramics Studio Lab Technician: Instruction and Classroom Support 1
LOCATION: Lynnwood, Washington
The Art Department at Edmonds College seeks an experienced Ceramics Studio Lab Technician to support its ceramics program 16 hours per week each quarter. This role requires significant responsibility and independence in assisting the ceramics instructor with studio operations and maintenance. An understanding of departmental programs and internal procedures is crucial for effectively coordinating tasks.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Studio Management:

Oversee the daily operations of the ceramics studio during academic quarters.

Create an inclusive, welcoming, and safe studio atmosphere by collaborating with faculty, staff, and students.

Train students, staff, and community members in ceramics studio health and safety practices and maintain the studio safety handbook.

Serve as the Ceramics Studio Safety Officer and liaise with OSHA representatives.
-
Report new chemicals in the studio to ensure accurate record-keeping in the college-wide SDS database.
-
Assist in organizing and supervising firing schedules aligned with the ceramics curriculum.
-
Prepare demonstrations and assignments as needed.
-
Supervise students in the safe use of studio equipment and proper housekeeping practices.
-
Coordinate studio cleaning per OSHA standards.
-
Resolve conflicts calmly and diplomatically.
Equipment and Supplies
-
Maintain ceramics studio equipment in a safe, clean, and orderly condition, following safety regulations.
-
Inventory, submit, and monitor equipment maintenance requests.
-
Recommend new equipment purchases as needed.
-
Order and prepare materials for ceramics classes.
-
Safely mix glazes and maintain records.
-
Load and fire various kilns, keeping accurate records.
-
Ensure proper storage, disposal, or recycling of studio materials.
Minimum Qualifications:
-
Availability for 16 hours per week during each quarter.
-
Knowledge of ceramic lab practices, procedures, and equipment.
-
Documented experience with ceramics studio equipment.
-
Knowledge of loading and firing kilns and glaze mixing.
-
Ability to perform the listed job responsibilities.
-
Customer service-oriented.
-
Strong verbal, listening, communication, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.

Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
Desired Qualifications:
Two or more years of ceramic studio management experience-
Associate degree in Art or equivalent experience in the ceramics field
This is a Classified position that reports to the Program Specialist 4.

PHYSICAL WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is typically performed in an office setting and onsite/in-person. The ability to sit at a desk/computer station, bend, stoop, walk, and generally move around the office to consult with others, work within a busy environment, and remain focused on tasks. Inventory management requires some lifting and moving of objects up to 50lbs. Excellent communication skills are essential. This includes the ability to speak clearly and fully comprehend written and spoken English and will include communication with people for whom English is not their first language. This also includes the ability to produce clearly written documents. Those who are multilingual are strongly encouraged to apply.
WORK SCHEDULE:
This is a permanent part-time classified position for a 16-hour-per-week schedule. For example, Monday & Wednesday, 9:00 A.M to 1:00 p.m.; Tuesday & Thursday, 12:00 to 4:00 PM,
COMPENSATION:
Salary is Range 39, $3,294-$3,700/month (prorated to a 16 hour per week schedule), with progressive increases to $4,385. This position is not eligible for benefits.
