Our services include emergency shelter, transitional housing, rental subsidies, mental health services, and wrap around services. What qualifications are required for this position?
You Are Also:
- A person with a minimum of 5 years accounting experience in the nonprofit sector responsible for tracking all financial entries related to agency funding in compliance with local, State and federal requirements.
- Holding a bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance is required, CPA strongly preferred.
- Proficient in QuickBooks Online. Ideally has implemented accounting software systems and/or upgrades.
- A person proficient in Microsoft Excel (Intermediate level) and Google sheets.
- Someone with Strong Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), financial reporting standards and regulatory compliance requirements.
- Knowledgeable in accounts payable, accounts receivable, journal entries, balance sheet analysis, accounting management of capital assets, etc.
- Experienced in managing and training accounting staff.
- Someone who has at least 4 years of experience assisting in the annual audit process with a nonprofit agency.
- Ability to multi-task and shift priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Flexible, compassionate, and supportive attitude.
- Excellent analytical skills and problem-solving abilities, with a keen attention to detail.
- Works well independently and within a multi-disciplinary team environment, managing multiple projects and priorities, and working cooperatively to meet internal and external requests.
- Demonstrated ability to speak and write in a succinct, informative, and respectful manner such that content, expectations and timelines are clearly understood by an audience.
What You Will Do
Responsibilities include
- Oversees accounting functions including the general ledger, account reconciliations, transaction processing (AR, AP, GL). Facilitate accurate and timely monthly, quarterly and annual closes and preparation of financial statements.
- Ensures that the organization has adequate financial controls and establishes additional controls as necessary.
- Works closely with staff accountants to ensure that accounting data is entered correctly, and accruals are computed according to accounting principles.
- Oversee monthly and quarterly invoicing to the various funders.
- Ensuring compliance with financial regulations and laws, including tax laws and grant regulations.
- Assists CFO with collaborating with external auditors to ensure timely completion of audits (Single Audit, grantor’s audits) and Property tax returns.
- Oversee financial documents storage.
- Provides financial information to staff outside of the Finance Department in a timely and accurate manner; work with departments as necessary to adjust their financial plans.
- Assists in preparation of financial documents for finance committee meetings.
- Assist in updating accounting policies and procedures.
- Monthly reconciliation of the bank accounts.
- Assist Executive leadership team in making decisions about service contracts, lease agreements, and purchases.
- Trains and manages the accounting/finance staff.
- Provides financial information to the Executive team and staff outside of the Finance Department in a timely and accurate manner; work with departments as necessary to adjust their financial plans.
- Perform other duties and functions as are necessary and as assigned by the CFO or incidental to the proper performance of this position.
Working Conditions
This position is eligible for remote work and occasional in person as needed. Time spent on-site versus remote working will be discussed and agreed upon with your supervisor. You are expected to be available on-site as necessary given business needs. You must be able to stand for long periods of time and perform physical activities, including lifting up to 25 pounds. You will be subject to frequent interruptions and must be able to multitask and handle stress.
Local travel in the greater Bay Area may be required.

This is a full-time, 40 hours per week, salaried position. This is a hybrid position (flex work), with some days required in our Castro Valley Office.
