JOB SUMMARY
Serve on the Leadership team to support the School Director in overseeing Cornerstone Children’s Center daily operations, personnel, communications, curriculum, and facilities. Cornerstone Children’s Center is a ministry of First Presbyterian Church of Berkeley as a Christian play-based infant/toddler and preschool program.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES/ACTIVITIES
Teaching/working with infants, toddlers, and preschoolers is a very physically demanding job. It requires the ability to bend frequently, stoop, kneel, run, sweep, reach, and lift over-head, climb stairs, sit on the floor, wipe off low tables, carry loads, stand for long periods, push children in strollers or cribs, lift children in and out of chairs or cribs, hold children on your lap, move tables and chairs, move and set up play equipment (such as climbing structures, trikes, balance beams, large pillows or mats, sand tarps, etc.), throw and catch balls, walk on uneven surfaces (including sand), give CPR or first aid, etc. All staff are expected to be able to participate in these kinds of activities daily.
Leadership & Daily Operations (40%)
- Fill in for the School Director as needed to open or close the school. Opening requires arriving 30 minutes before school opens and closing requires remaining 15 minutes after school closure.
- Conduct daily business of the school, including respond to phone messages, approve short term extra hours, and respond to any emergency decisions that must be made immediately. Assist in creating the daily schedule for staff (breaks, lunches, support teachers assignment for the day.)
- Implement licensing regulations in all aspects of the program.
- In the School Director’s absence:
o Report and follow licensing procedures for unusual injuries to a child.
o Report and follow proper workers compensation procedures for staff injuries.
o Assisting licensing examiner.
- Provide information for prospective parents and conduct tours as necessary.
- Help integrate new families into the school.
- Checking in/filing children’s records; accepting tuition payments; recording immunizations.
- Maintain records including update children’s accounts/records in the ProCare system and Learning Genie.
- Direct and train staff in evacuation procedures.
- Help with administrative/clerical duties as needed/assigned (sign-in/out sheets, time cards, etc.)
- Attend Administrators and Parent Advisory Board meeting with School Director as needed.
- Attend and participate in Parent Information Nights.
- Planning menus, food/supply shopping, and preparing snacks or special school meals.
Personnel/Supervision (25%)
- Model professional behavior, lead by example and follow policies and expectations outlined in job descriptions and staff handbooks.
- Mentor staff, provide support and feedback.
- Supervise/assist staff as needed in daily activities. Discuss concerns with the staff and School Director.
- Supervise and/or train teaching staff for the center per licensing and personnel requirements.
- Evaluate teaching staff per personnel requirements.
- Provide input on classroom assignments and job duties.
- Assist in interviewing prospective staff.
- Observe and report unusual behavior of staff, parents, children, or members of the public to the School Director.
Communications (15%)
- Always follow guidelines in Cornerstone’s communication policy. It is an essential job function that the Assistant Director communicates effectively; gets along with clients, coworkers, and management.
- Be available to respond to parent questions and concerns. Communicate children’s daily activities, behavior, and needs to their parents.
- Listen to/resolve conflict among staff or parents in a professional manner.
- Communicate/remind staff of school policies and communicate supportively at all times.
- Communicate/model appropriate behavior with staff, parents, and children.
- Report inappropriate communications or behavior between staff, between staff and children, or between staff and parents to the School Director immediately.
Teaching/Curriculum (15%)
- Able to work in any classroom as part of the teaching team and make every effort to meet the children’s physical and emotional needs. Meet the expectations of a teacher in that role.
- Assist staff in planning and supervising implementation of developmentally appropriate curriculum.
- Lead on-site curriculum enrichment opportunities/training for the staff.
- Be familiar with NAEYC Accreditation Process and NAEYC Standards
- Be familiar with Creative Curriculum and Get Set for School Curriculum.
- Be familiar with ASQ-2 and ASQ-SE screenings
Facility (5%)
- Report unsafe conditions and/or maintenance concerns in the facility to the School Director or arrange for their correction.
- Works with the School Director and teaching teams to maintain a safe, clean, and orderly learning environment throughout the day.
- Replacing and organizing earthquake shed supplies (food, clothing, diapering, etc.)
- Help reset the classrooms/school after carpets/floors have been cleaned during the breaks.
Professional Development Expectations
- Attend CAEYC Conferences. On years that it is not local, the responsibility of attending away conferences will be rotated between the School Director and the Assistant Director.
- Attend Early Childhood Education community resources such as local workshops.
- Continued growth academically working towards a higher degree.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Growing and deepening faith in Jesus Christ. Ability to lead prayer.
- AA/AS degree or higher in Child Development or related field. Transcript for ECE degrees/courses.
- Meets state licensing requirement for Site Supervisor or Program Director with three (3) units in infant/toddler development.
- Two (2) years minimum supervisory experience in a large center (more than 10 staff).
- Three (3) years minimum experience planning and implementing curriculum.
- One (1) year experience at a NAEYC Accredited Center
- CPR, First Aid, and Infectious Disease current certifications.
- Familiar with Creative Curriculum, ASQ Screenings, and NAEYC Standards and Developmentally Appropriate Practices (DAP)
- Confident to set limits with children, staff, and parents.
- Physically able to lift up to 50 lbs. above waist level.
- Proof of Measles, Pertussis, Covid vaccinations, and current TB test.
- Clear background check via Live Scan (FBI and DOJ).
SCHEDULE
Monday–Friday 8:45am–5:45pm (If children are not picked up, remain until children are picked up).
Arrive 15 minutes before the start time of any Staff Development Day or Parent Conference Day.

Hiring Bonus of $500.00 awarded after 90 day probation period.
