Operating Room Registered Nurse
Department: Surgical Services
Reports To: Operating Room (OR) Manager
Effective Date of Description: 11/99
Supervises: ORT’s, Housekeeping Aides
Ages of Patients Served: Age 2 thru Geriatric
PRIMARY PURPOSE:
The Registered Nurse is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating patient care to meet the needs of the patient and his/her family during the preoperative and intraoperative period. Basic leadership and communication skills are essential to form a working relationship with registered Nurses, physicians, and ancillary health care personnel. Knowledge of surgical procedures, instrumentation and equipment are required to deliver safe nursing care
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Complies with established hospital customer service standards
2. Demonstrates knowledge of pathophysiology, injuries and development
3. Demonstrates knowledge of anatomy and physiology as related to the utilization of instruments, supplies and equipment
4. Demonstrates knowledge of universal precautions
5. Capable of performing all circulating and assigned support duties in a manner that provides high quality and safe surgical patient care
6. Demonstrates knowledge of specimen handling during and after surgery
7. Capable of performing scrub duties
8. Knowledge of proper performance and assembly of surgical instrumentation
9. Demonstrates understanding of wound classifications, according to AORN and Joint Commission Standards
10. Demonstrates an ability to understand and comprehend verbal and written instructions

11. Effectively evaluates and documents standards of care for each procedure
12. Demonstrates competency in psychomotor skills
13. Demonstrates good sterile technique
14. Demonstrates a working knowledge of all electrical and power equipment used in the OR
15. Assist anesthesia with the various methods of induction, starting and administering IV therapy
16. Capable of calculating, preparing and administering pharmaceutical preparations
17. Performs all documentation of operative record in a timely, accurate and concise manner
18. Demonstrates an awareness of legal issues in all aspects of patient care and unit function and utilizes appropriate resources, to manage situations and minimize risk to patient, self and colleagues
19. Must be available for “ON CALL” rotation, weekend and holiday coverage
20. Maintains a positive attitude when adjusting to changes and adapting to the needs of the department
21. Basic Life Support (BLS) certified, and Advanced Cardiac life Support
(ACLS)
22. Demonstrates awareness and sensitivity to patient/family rights with respect for dignity and confidentiality
23. Communicates effectively with departmental staff to provide continuity of patient care
24. Awareness of the religious, ethical, sexual orientation, and cultural differences among the various population groups
SECONDARY:
1. Demonstrates cooperation and flexibility in staffing patterns and resolution of staffing conflicts.
2. Willing to work overtime when emergency conditions require additional hours
3. Demonstrates an ability to resolve difficult problems promptly and logically
4. Participates in data collection for research projects when necessary and appropriate
5. Assumes relief Charge Nurse responsibilities for the functioning of the OR when necessary

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Education: Graduate of an NLN accredited school of nursing.
BSN preferred
Experience: OR RN experience preferred
Certification/Licensure: Current California RN license. BLS and ACLS Certified
Skills/Abilities: Must be able to maintain emotional stability
Physical: Must be able to pass employee physical prior to employment. Must be in good physical condition to meet the demands of an active position including extensive walking, moderate sitting, standing, stooping and lifting. Able to lift infant/toddler (up to 40 lbs) independently, and all other patients with assistance. Physically able to Perform CPR
Computer: Basic computer skills
