Job Overview
We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Senior Bioinformatics Developer with
expertise in public health microbial genomics to join our team. In this role, you will lead the
design, implementation, and optimization of bioinformatics workflows for analysis of genomic
data from a multitude of viral, bacterial, and fungal pathogens.
Responsibilities
1. Provide scientific guidance on development, maintenance, and optimization of
bioinformatics workflows such as those available in the open-source Theiagen Genomics
Github Repository (https://github.com/theiagen)
2. Establish best practices in code review, documentation, and testing of bioinformatics
workflows to ensure reliability and reproducibility of analyses
3. Document and automate processes through a focus on continuous improvement
4. Lead meetings with public health partners and external collaborators to communicate
important updates, identify key issues, and strategize solutions
5. Advise, mentor and supervise junior bioinformatics developers and foster an
environment of collaboration, innovation, and excellence across the team
6. Stay informed about the latest developments in bioinformatics, genomics, and public
health to support continuous improvement and modernization
7. Perform any other tasks as required to support the objectives of the team and
organization
Qualifications
1. PhD in bioinformatics, computational biology, genomics, or a related computational field
2. Have an understanding of infectious diseases or public health
3. Extensive experience in bioinformatics development, with a track record of leading
projects from conceptualization to completion
4. Proficiency in at least one programming language to an advanced level
5. Knowledge of other commonly used languages in bioinformatics such as (Python, WDL,
Nextflow, R) and experience with version control systems (Git)
6. Strong expertise in bioinformatics tools and databases relevant to microbial genomics
(e.g., BWA, SAMtools, GATK, NCBI databases)
7. Demonstrated experience with workflow containerization technologies such as Docker or
Singularity, and workflow management systems
8. Understanding of molecular biology concepts, genomics technologies, and infectious
disease epidemiology
9. Excellent problem-solving abilities and analytical skills, with a strong attention to detail
and a commitment to quality and reproducibility
10. Proven ability to communicate complex technical concepts effectively to diverse
audiences, both verbally and in writing
11. Experience working with metagenomic data is desirable
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $75,000.00 - $125,000.00 per year
