MAIN FUNCTION:
The Staff Nurse is a professional care giver who assumes responsibility and accountability for a group of patients for a designated time frame and provides care to these patients via therapeutic use of self, the nursing process, the environment/instrumentation, and other health care team members. Reports to the Heart & Vascular Clinical Director.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
** 1. Performs assessment/data collection in an ongoing and systematic manner, focusing on physiologic, psychological and cognitive status.
** 2. Implements care in manner per Medical Center policy and procedure.
** 3. Administers medications per Medical Center policy and procedure.
** 4. Performs documentation duties on unit and in patient record which is timely, accurate and concise.
** 5. Assists with scrubbing, circulation and recording in the Cath Lab per Cath Lab policies and physicians specific procedures.
** 6. Practices sterile technique and prevents cross-contamination.
** 7. Maintains an adequate stock and proper inventory of drugs and narcotics.
** 8. Is responsible for on-call coverage with response time not to exceed 30 minutes.
** 9. Is skilled in Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
** 10. Functions to establish priorities of patients care based on essential patient needs and available unit resources of time, personnel, equipment and supplies.
** 11. Identifies patient SO learning needs and implements appropriate measures to meet these.
** 12. Demonstrates an awareness of self-responsibility and accountability for own professional practice.
** 13. Demonstrates self-directed learning and participates in continuing education to meet own professional development. Attends staff meetings and mandatory in-services.
*** 14. Formulates and uses effective working relationships with all health care team members, patients and SO.
** 15. Selects and maintains Cath Lab equipment to be used in procedures per physician specific procedures.
** 16. Maintains as adequate stock of supplies.
** 17. Prepares opaque media injector per manufacture's recommendation.
** 18. Cleans lab following patient discharge per Cath Lab policies
** 19. Keeps work rooms, equipment and accessories clear.
** 20. Remains flexible in staffing patterns and resolutions of staffing conflicts; rotates through non-invasive Cardiology Lab, as needed.
** 21. Heart Institute Ambulatory Care Unit (HIACU) rotation involving prep and recovery of Cardiology, Electrophysiology, and Interventional Radiology patients required.
** 22. Prepares and positions patient correctly for specific examinations.
** 23. Assists in transporting patients.
** 24. Assists, orients and instructs other personnel in Cath Lab procedures.
** 25. Participates in unit, Department of Nursing, Operations Division and Radiology Performance Improvement activities as well as standards development.
** 26. Provides age appropriate care to patient according to their age groups for the particular unit to which the individual is assigned. (Refer to attached addendum)

EDUCATION:
Registered Nurse; current NYS licensure. ACLS preferred.
EXPERIENCE:
Minimum of one year critical care experience.
CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION (CPR) REQUIREMENTS:
Basic Life Support (BLS) required. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required. Cardiac experience required. Previous Critical Care/ICU experience desirable.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Required to be on feet much of time. Appreciable physical effort including lifting, reaching, stooping, moving patients and pushing of beds and stretchers.

Category I. Tasks that involve exposure to blood, body fluids or tissues.
