JOB DESCRIPTION
Position Description
The Senior Minister is the spiritual leader of the First Congregational Church of Nantucket, providing vibrant and professional pastoral, worship, strategic, and administrative leadership to our multigenerational congregation in our seasonal and year-round community of Nantucket.
Duties and Responsibilities (include but are not limited to:) Responsible for Pastoral Leadership
- In coordination with the staff, plans and leads church worship to deepen our individual and congregational faith and spirituality. Regularly develops and delivers biblically based, intellectually stimulating, and current-day relevant sermons. Administers the Sacraments and conducts other rites of the church, such as weddings, baptisms, and funerals.
- Works with the Church Council and leadership boards, develops, implements, reviews, and amends the Nantucket FCC’s strategic plan articulating the vision, mission, and long-range goals of the church. Brings insight and creative solutions in meeting strategic goals, focusing on ministry needs, and the future vitality and growth of the congregation.
- Conducts and directs the pastoral care of church membership. Offers confidential counsel to those in need and coordinates visitation ministry including lay and pastoral visits to the sick, hospitalized, and homebound. Ministers to the bereaved and conducts premarital counseling.
Oversees and Coordinates Christian Education Programs
- Oversees the youth and children ministries. Provides guidance on curriculum and programming to ministry staff and layperson support. Supervises, coordinates, and assists in the Confirmation program.
- Leads adult education and new member classes in coordination and consultation with the Deacons and other ministry staff. Organizes and guides ad hoc groups and committees as needed for the purpose of community building, prayer, and Bible study.
Leads Outreach to Community and Denomination
- In coordination with the Deacon and Church Life Board and other boards, provides an open and welcoming environment to encourage growth in membership.
- Engages in community activities in local programs and organizations that promote areas of congregation focus and concern. Represents the commitment of faith, Christian love, and accepting culture of our church to the community.
- Participates in and takes leadership roles, when appropriate, in the wider fellowships of the Christian church, including the National Association and Massachusetts Association of Congregational Christian Churches and the Nantucket Interfaith Council.
Administration
- With assistance from the congregation, assesses staffing needs and develops a process to hire appropriate personnel to meet program needs including Christian education, music, and other ministerial services.
- Manages and directs church staff through weekly meetings and church administrative functions. Responsible for effectively and efficiently administering resources.
- Develops and implements helpful communication outreach for the staff and congregation through regular staff meetings, posted office hours, newsletter articles, bulletin notices, the church website, external print and social media.
- In coordination with the Church Treasurer and Finance Board, assists in developing the annual operating budget. Effectively manages expenses and monitors revenue and recommends adjustments to ensure financial goals are met. Assists in planning for and makes recommendations on long-term capital needs of the church. Works with the Finance Board to plan and implement stewardship and giving programs.
- Directs the Office Administrator and church staff to schedule and oversee special events and host outside groups using our church such as musical concerts, AA groups, speakers from community organizations, and churches renting our space for worship.
- Will oversee and coordinate weekly communication of calendar notices, events, campus functions, etc.
- Has oversight responsibility for all buildings and grounds; upkeep, safety, etc.
Personal Growth
- Maintains appropriate time for personal reading, research and meditation. Pursues continuing education opportunities and attends appropriate denominational and ecumenical conferences as necessary.
Qualifications and Experience
- Ordained minister in Christian Protestant faith or NACCC affiliation who has a Masters in Divinity from an accredited program, with at least five years of previous ministry and preaching experience.
- Demonstrative of Christian love and faith with the ability to inspire others in the same.
- Exemplify solid judgment and ability to lead others.
- Strong interpersonal skills and aptitude for working collaboratively.
- Exceptional organizational and computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook). Familiarity with social media communications.
- Excellent public speaking, written and oral communication skills.
Support
The Senior Minister is primarily responsible to the Church Council, the Advisory Board and the Deacon and Church Life Board. As a staff member he/she receives support and counsel from the church staff, the Moderator, Church Council, and Deacons.
Salary and Benefits
This is a salaried position functioning under the terms of a signed contracts with the Church Council. Salary and benefits are recommended by the Advisory Board and Finance Board in consultation with each other, then approved by the Church Council and maintained as an approved addendum for this position. Generally, a full benefits package, and housing through the church-owned parsonage, are standard.
The Senior Minister’s established presence and work schedule maintains a balance between church office hours and out-of-office time, allowing for administration, visitation, and personal growth and study time.

Pay: $55,000.00 - $75,000.00 per year
