The Lamb Center (TLC) is a daytime drop-in shelter for individuals experiencing homelessness in Fairfax, VA. It provides various services without cost to its guests, including breakfast, lunch, showers, laundry service, Bible study, case management, AA meetings, a nurse practitioner clinic, a dental clinic, and much more. TLC partners with local groups and organizations passionate about serving homeless individuals.
About the Shelter Monitor
In coordination with Operations, the Shelter Monitor contributes to the overall operations of the Lamb Center and provides support to guests, volunteers, and staff. This position utilizes trauma-informed strategies to promote a safe and welcoming environment. The Shelter Monitor will also open, close, and supervise the center to cover for other personnel as needed. This position is part-time, with hours from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. every Saturday. There are also approximately 12 additional hours during the week, ideally on Tuesday, and Thursday. The Shelter Monitor must have experience and the desire to work with people experiencing homelessness and be committed to the mission, vision, and values of the Lamb Center.
Roles and Responsibilities
· Create a welcoming environment for new and returning guests
· Monitor the guest service areas, ensuring a clean, safe, and calm environment
· Appropriately respond to emergencies and conflicts using trauma-informed de-escalation as needed
· Communicate and uphold Lamb Center Policies and Guest Guidelines, setting limits with guests as appropriate
Support volunteers in all service areas and ensure that guest service operations are running smoothly
· Provide transportation to the Workforce Development crew if needed
· Greet and assist visitors and donors, including receiving and documenting in-kind donations
· Ensure smooth and consistent operations on Saturdays including opening and closing the center
· Daily data collection and documentation, as needed
· Attend staff training and department meetings as needed and other duties as assigned
Qualifications
· An understanding and support of TLC services and mission
· Experience working with people experiencing homelessness, including those with mental illness and/or chemical dependency
· Ability and willingness to work compassionately and professionally with guests displaying a wide range of challenging behavior
· Ability to communicate and work with diverse populations and to provide services in a non-judgmental and non-discriminatory manner
· Ability to manage crises with minimum supervision and to set and observe appropriate personal limits and boundaries
· Ability to exercise mature and sound judgment as well as good problem-solving and conflict-resolution skills
· Understanding of Trauma-informed care practices
· Current MANDT and CPR/First Aid (or willing to obtain) certifications
· Willingness to complete background screening
· Excellent reliability and dependability
· Basic proficiency in operating office equipment such as phone, fax, copier, and computer
· Valid driver's license and reliable transportation
· Social services or nonprofit experience preferred
Physical Demands & Work Environment
While performing this job, this position typically spends time sitting, standing, stooping, climbing stairs, walking, and carrying and lifting up to 50 pounds.
The employee may be in contact with individuals in crisis who may not be attentive to basic personal hygiene, health, and safety practices. The employee must be ready to respond quickly and effectively to many types of situations and, when necessary, use trauma-informed de-escalation strategies to prevent and resolve conflicts.
