SUMMARY:
The Operating Room Nurse Manager must meet the competency requirements contained within the RN – OR job responsibilities. In addition, the Operating Room Nurse Manager supervises roles and responsibilities provided by OR professionals and para-professional staff.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Estimated 25% assuming direct patient care assignment

Personnel Management
- Consistently prepares monthly OR staff schedule in accordance with staffing plan, scope of services, new processes or procedures, and based on changing needs of the department.
- Dedicated to the professional development of supervised personnel; by leading with exemplary conduct, providing mentorship when needed, allocating time and money for staff attendance to outside educational offerings, and supervisory support as required by the personnel.
- Determines daily assignments based on skill set & demonstrated competencies of available staff. Assignments of employees are made for training or advancing professional development.
- Determines allocation of human resources according to caseload, special assignments or projects, concurrent indirect patient care activities, providing training or education and budgetary constraints.
- Evaluates staff level of competency and learning needs based on changing conditions of medical technology, new processes, new procedures or desired professional advancement. Works individually with staff member to address learning needs and establishes plan of action.
- Assigns staff member to serve as preceptor for orientation or re-training.
Meets regularly with staff member and preceptor (when applicable) to assess progress and re-evaluate plan of action.Evaluates staff member’s potential for success and/or initiates exit strategy for termination.
- Responsible for fostering an environment which promotes staff growth and development.
- Intervenes as necessary and with prompt attention to conduct observed of direct reports which is unbecoming of a professional in the workplace.
- Conducts necessary follow up with corrective action plan for staff members who are not meeting performance expectations.
- Conducts performance appraisals of staff members in timely manner.
- Possesses commitment to develop mutually supported professional relationships with physicians, colleagues, direct reports and company representatives.
- Completes payroll corrections electronically and written for employee file.
- Communicate directly with physicians regarding their preferences for patient care and patient teaching for policy development or pre-printed physician orders.
- Monitor patient satisfaction (through the use of surveys) to evaluate patient care and services provided and prepares report for Clinical/Nurse Manager and PCC review.
- Facilitate smooth and efficient running of the surgery schedule. Coordinate staffing and movement of patient care through the continuum of care.
- Assists in determining staffing needs. Assists in the interviewing and hiring process of identified staff positions.
- Conducts team meetings as necessary, recording summary of discussion and permanent filing.
- Oversees orientation of new hires, by assigning staff member, or self, to serve as preceptor and conducts follow up with new hire and preceptor for progress and learning needs.Leadership
- Collaborates with other management team members in meeting the mission & goals of the organization.
- Identifies short and long term goals of the Center, either directed by Board of Directors, Management Company or represented by personnel consensus.
- Determines functional processes needed to achieve goals and inspires staff members to accomplish goals set forth.
- Allocates resources necessary to scope of identified goals.
- Participant on the Quality Assessment and Performance Improvement Committee.
- Responsible for preparation and analysis of Operational Reports, OR stats and related quality stats and entries.
- Intervenes as necessary and with prompt attention to non-compliance of facility policies or procedures.
- Participates in monitoring and completing compliance of concurrent activities as found on the Concurrent Activity List: Quality control checks, surveillance, out dates, occurrences, month end reports etc.
- Determines competency assessment of high risk, problem prone or new processes and plans training day activities.
- Reviews facility policy & procedures annually. Assists in policy revisions, reflecting current practice standards.
- Manage grievances (patient, surgeon, staff) as appropriate for the condition, forwarding to higher authority as necessary.
- Collaborates with other management team members in meeting the mission & goals of the organization.
- Directs staff members in daily completion of work assignments with clear and concise information and expectations.
- Responsible for other functions as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Previous supervisor or middle management experience required.
- Preferred accomplishments include experience in interventional procedures and outpatient surgery.
- Effective communication skills and have an ability to work compatibly with all physicians and staff.
- Possess strong organizational skills and a clear understanding of the importance of efficiency and cost effectiveness in an outpatient surgery center.
- Must have an aptitude for understanding, operating, and troubleshooting machines and equipment.
- Possess abilities for independent problem solving and demonstrate rational and confidence in decisions rendered.
- Must be able to make quick assessments of patients and be able to handle emergency situations appropriately and or while directing others.
- Ability to direct activities of others with enforcement as necessary.
