Position Purpose:
Performs supplementary work in the coordination, implementation, supervision, and evaluation of various sports programs for area youth. Attends sports programs and performs related work as required.

- Instructs, evaluates, supervises, and assists various sports programs for area youth.
- Assists Program Instructor in providing participant supervision, skill instruction, and knowledge of sport.
- Responds to public inquiries about recreational and summer sports camp offerings.
- Collaborates with peers to meet programming and community needs.
- Alerts Sports Director of problems and policy issues.
- Performs similar or related work as required, directed, or as the situation dictates.
Minimum Qualifications:
Two or more years’ experience in preferred sport is required. Experience in child care and CPR certification is preferred. Must be flexible to meet program scheduling needs. Must pass the (CORI) history/juvenile record history as well as Sex Offender Registry Information (SORI) background checks.
Knowledge, Ability and Skill:
Knowledge: Knowledge of organizing recreational and sports events or programs. Knowledge of various sports game rules. Knowledge of sporting facilities, and maintenance of sites. Knowledge to follow public health and safety rules and regulations regarding sporting facilities. Familiarity with community facilities and resources for scheduling events. Knowledge of sports management, recreational philosophy, planning and administration. Knowledge of rule and regulations of various sports for youth programs. Knowledge of secure facilities for sports events.
Ability: Excellent communication skills both verbally and in writing. Ability to communicate in a second language is helpful. Ability to be understood. Ability to communicate respectfully with people of diverse cultures and backgrounds. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, other agencies, community leaders, instructors, participants, youth, parents, and the general public. Ability to demonstrate knowledge of sports programs and sports programming rules and regulations. Ability to manage details for implementing sports programming and to book sporting event facilities. Ability to perform physical and manual tasks.
Skill: Proficient organizational skills; effective communicator and collaborator. Skill to perform administrative tasks effectively and efficiently. Strength and skill to perform manual tasks.

Supervision:
Supervision Scope: Performs moderately complex and highly responsible duties in the implementation of the Amherst Recreation sports program for youth. Uses considerable judgement in decision making and determining appropriate course of action. Manages and ensures compliance and uniformity of established procedures and policies for programming.
Supervision Received: Works under the general direction of the Amherst Recreation Sports Director and Sports Program Instructor. Exercises high level of independence of judgement in performing daily duties.
Supervision Given: Supervises all sports program participants and volunteer help.
Job Environment:
- Makes regular contacts with officials in public schools, schools and town departments, directors, youth, participants, parents, and general public about programs. Most contacts involve gathering and sharing of information, and providing directions and instructions.
- Has limited access to program-oriented confidential information.
- Errors in judgement and administration could have adverse effect on Town’s programs, may result in monetary or legal/repercussions especially relative to contractual agreements or could be injurious to the reputation of the town’s program.
