Job Summary
Reporting directly to the Director of Finance, the Senior Accountant ensures the integrity of accounting information by recording, verifying, consolidating, and entering daily transactions into accounting journals. The Senior Accountant maintains documentation to support daily and monthly revenue collections, balancing, tracking and reporting. The Senior Accountant’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to updating the general ledger, financial reporting and ensuring internal financial controls are properly followed.
Essential Job Duties

Tracks, analyzes and ensures accuracy of revenue transactions on a daily basis.

Reviews and validates deposits and daily collection reports completed by the Finance Division employees to ensure cashier collections and receivable reports are properly balanced.
- Researches, tracks, and resolves accounting issues and balancing discrepancies associated with, but not limited to, bank reconciliations, daily collections, and other accounting matters.

Monitors, reconciles, and performs customer follow up for all transfer stamp transactions, discrepancies, and issues.

Establishes, monitors, and reconciles general ledger accounts on a monthly basis by inputting revenue collections into the general ledger system.

Provides assistance to the Finance Division employees for refund functions including, but not limited to, validating, processing, and monitoring refunds.

Prepares monthly bank and account reconciliations of all balance sheet and bank accounts.
- Satisfies reconciliation and remittance internal deadlines for reporting funds to the Cook County Treasurer.

Prepares, schedules and assembles paperwork and conducts for internal and external audit purposes.

Ensures internal financial controls are properly followed and documented.

Minimum Qualifications
- Possession of a Bachelor’s degree or higher in business or a related field such as Accounting, Finance, or Economics from an accredited college or university.

Three (3) years of full-time paid work experience in accounting, auditing and/or finance.

Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.
Preferred Qualifications
-
Possession of a Master’s degree or higher in business or related field such as Accounting, Finance, or Economics from an accredited college or university.

Five (5) years of full-time paid work experience in accounting, auditing and/or finance.
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA).
-
Two (2) years of full-time paid work experience in Government Accounting and/or Government Auditing.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
-
Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

Knowledge of Cook County Ordinances regarding pricing for revenue collection.

Advance knowledge of spreadsheet applications and other accounting computer software.

Proficiency with email, Microsoft Excel and Word applications.

Well-developed accounting and analytical skills.
- Detail oriented and able to solve problems.

Ability to write in a clear and coherent manner.

Ability to work with calculators, typewriters, databases and bank accounts.

Ability to utilize computer systems and search databases to run/produce reports and maintain financial spreadsheet records.

Ability to act and operate independently with minimal daily supervision from Director of Finance to accomplish objectives.

Ability to communicate objectively and to work well with fellow Employees and customers.
- Ability to exercise good judgment.
- Ability to manage teams and projects to meet reporting deadlines.
Physical Requirements

Long periods of time working on computer requiring vision and typing capability.
- Standing and walking for moderate periods of time

Ability to sit for at least two (2) hours at a time
