Position Information
The Kingsville Section is hiring a General Transportation Technician I, II or III. This position helps to make roads safer while gaining additional skills in roadway maintenance work. As a General Transportation Technician I, II or III, you will report to the Maintenance Section Supervisor or their Crew Chief .
TxDOT’s Kingsville Maintenance office is responsible for maintaining around 670 lane miles throughout Kleberg County and the Southern Part of JIM Wells and Nueces County. Our General Transportation Technicians are the heart of TxDOT and play a vital role in ensuring a safe throughway for the traveling public. This office utilizes light and heavy equipment such as front-end loaders, backhoes, skid steers and motor graders, just to name a few. Position Description
Performs routine transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.
Essential Duties:
General Transportation Tech I:
- Assists in identifying, repairing and installing signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; performs basic welding as needed; as required uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products related to these activities.
- Assists in providing support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites; assists stranded motorists as required.
- Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic.
- Maintains picnic and rest areas, rights-of-way, maintenance yards and comfort stations.
- Move/picks up litter and roadway debris.
- Mows rights-of-way and picnic and rest areas; performs plant and landscape maintenance including trimming trees and brush.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned
General Transportation Tech II:
In addition to the above
- Assists in inspecting traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications for devices; safety laws, rules, regulations and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
- Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs skilled roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
- Operates heavy equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a half cubic yard or more, tractor-trailer haul truck, large dragline, shovel, paint striper, and dump truck.
- Operates light equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a quarter cubic yards or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper, and mower.
- Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment and completes various required reports including time-keeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, and PMI.
General Transportation Tech III:
In addition to the above
- May serve as a work crew project lead ensuring work performed meets project specifications.
- Trains other employees.
- Identifies, analyzes, and implements solutions for complex maintenance problems.
- Maintains construction project records and/or bridge inspection records; processes related paperwork; reviews files for compliance with the bridge inspection Manual of Procedures.
- Operates complex heavy equipment such as a motor grader, large excavator, heavy bulldozer, crane, herbicide truck, heavy asphalt paving machine, self-propelled asphalt distributor, and profiling/milling machine.
- Inspects routine and non-routine maintenance contract construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: No education required.
Experience: GTT I = No experience required; GTT II = 1 year experience*; GTT III = 2 years experience*
- Experience must be in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated part-time equivalent). Related technical training or education from an accredited institution may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications.
Licenses and Certifications:
- Valid driver’s license at the time of application. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
- General Transportation Tech I - Must have or obtain a Commercial Class "A" CDL with "N" Tank Endorsement within 120 days from date of employment.
- General Transportation Tech II & III- Must have a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License. Must have or obtain an "N" Endorsement within 120 calendar days from date of employment
- Safety Impact Certificate, which will be issued by employer at time of hire
