The Retail Sales Manager plays a pivotal role in bridging the retail sales team with the broader hard goods/green goods sales staff, ensuring coherence with divisional plans and objectives. A key focus of the
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide comprehensive support to the Retail sales team and broader hard goods/green goods sales staff, facilitating the execution of divisional plans aimed at achieving Division sales and margin objectives.
- Understand and execute on the Retail sales plan at sales rep and customer levels:
- Work with district sales managers to engage and support staff in Retail sales opportunities.
- Visit all key accounts for direct reports at least once per year.
- Visit company-wide Retail key accounts at least once every 2 years.
- Oversee, mentor, and coach the on-the-road Retail sales team, fostering their professional growth and development:
- Conduct weekly individual calls to review progress and address any needs or challenges.
- Travel with each direct report salesperson on at least three travel trips annually, providing ongoing coaching and performance assessments.
- Lead recruitment efforts, interviewing candidates and making hiring decisions in alignment with organizational plans.
- Develop and implement comprehensive onboarding activities and initial training sessions for new hires.
- Conduct regular performance evaluations, providing constructive feedback and guidance.
- Create personalized annual development plans for each direct report, ensuring their continued progress towards achieving sales targets.
- Proactively address staff issues and concerns, including implementing corrective and disciplinary actions when necessary.
- Resolve customer issues as needed with direct reports and other Retail accounts as requested by senior managers.
- Oversee Retail Division trade show events and team meeting events.
- Develop comprehensive training plans for the retail team, including webinars and supplier travel, to enhance product knowledge and sales skills.
- Support and facilitate supplier travel initiatives to enhance territory sales, with a specific focus on targeted suppliers.
- Collaborate closely with internal staff and managers to meet team goals/objectives:
- Work with quote specialists to ensure competitive pricing while meeting Division margin goals.
- Partner with business managers to bring solutions to sales opportunities and meet margin goals · Provide valuable input and foster collaborative efforts with the Director of Sales:
- Develop comprehensive annual and fiscal sales goals and strategic plans for the retail division. o
- Ensure visibility to pertinent marketing opportunities by actively participating in key trade shows and publications, in alignment with divisional objectives.
- Communicate and prioritize division needs for technical support. o
- Conduct territory analyses to provide valuable insights and support divisional decision-making processes.
- Regularly review the sales performance of direct reports with the Director of Sales monthly to assess progress and identify areas for improvement.
- Recommend and prioritize staffing needs to ensure proper coverage and growth.
- Effectively communicate regional market needs, expectations, and competitive pressures to inform strategic planning and decision-making processes. · Perform additional projects/tasks as assigned by the Director of Sales or company management. ·

QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in business administration, Communications, Horticulture or a related field is preferred, but not required.
Experience:
- Previous experience or exposure in the horticultural retail industry is highly beneficial for seamless. integration into role responsibilities, but not required.
- Proven track record of sales and managerial experience essential, including supervisor experience, as This role will oversee 8-12 sales representatives.
- Ability to work autonomously with limited supervision, facilitating fast and effective transitions within the horticultural retail industry.
- Demonstrated capability to motivate, coach, and direct a team of sales representatives across multiple territories.
