The Veterinary Assistant directly handles inpatient and outpatient care, working in coordination with technicians and veterinarians. In the exam room the assistant takes patients’ history, vital signs and weight; prepares vaccines; collects samples and runs diagnostic tests; provides client education; and assists with animal restraint. Assistants also may help technicians in seeing appointments for procedures such as nail trims, sample collection & testing for long-term medication monitoring, surgery admission and discharge appointments. Assistants directly impact doctor productivity, client service and patient care. Assistants play a key role in communicating with clients in person and by phone for follow-up care and patient monitoring. Assistants maintain the cleanliness and general maintenance of the hospital. Assistants provide daily care and feeding of hospitalized pets by cleaning all kennels, taking all hospitalized dogs outside to urinate and defecate. Assistants promptly notify technicians and veterinarians when a pet needs medical attention.
Educational Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Associate’s degree preferred
Qualifications & Skills Needed:
- Experience in the veterinary industry and/or with animals (Preferred)
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to assist veterinarians in the practice of veterinary medicine
- Ability to read and comprehend instructions
- Effective communication with hospital team members and clients
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals
- Type information for patient records and prescription labels into the computer
Physical Obligations:
- Able to lift patients and carry equipment up to 25 pounds; ability to lift patients or carry equipment over 25 pounds with assistance
- Endure sitting, standing and walking on hard floor surfaces for extended periods
