General Summary:
The Manager of Property Underwriting assists the Director of Underwriting and Operations by ensuring sound property underwriting outcomes at point of sale, point of service, and point of renewal. They may also be tasked with leadership of initiatives and project teams within and beyond the department. They are responsible for hiring, developing, and leading property underwriters and processors and ensuring the delivery of work results that meet or exceed established time service and quality standards. They serve as an active member of the Underwriting Leadership Team, and they work with fellow department leaders and other business partners to help achieve sustained profitability for AFR.
Key Roles and Responsibilities
· Serve as an influential and respected strategic, leadership, and underwriting voice within and beyond the Underwriting and Operations Department.
· Serve as a positive role model for team members and others.
· Hire and develop high performing team members.
· Establish and manage team member authority levels.
· Establish, communicate, and reinforce work quantity and work quality standards.
· Monitor and manage team member performance relative to work quantity and work quality standards by:
o Tracking completed work at team and team member levels.
o Conducting regular quality reviews of team member work.
o Providing ongoing performance feedback and coaching.
· Monitor and manage work volume and work queues to ensure that time service standards are met and that workloads are fair and equitable.
· Deliver specific and timely feedback and coaching to team members in regularly scheduled and ad hoc coaching sessions.
· Evaluate and rate team member performance and conduct annual team member performance appraisals.
· Model a customer-driven approach to underwriting and problem-solving.
· Build and reinforce strong underwriting discipline across the team and throughout the department.
· Build positive and productive business partnerships with agency partners.
· Serve as a property underwriting subject matter expert.
· Maintain active communication with senior and other leaders across the enterprise as a key representative of and voice for underwriting. This may include proposals and presentations to the Board of Directors, Executive Management Team, and Senior Management Team.
· Represent AFR, as assigned, in discussions with reinsurance brokerage and reinsurance program partners. This may involve business travel.
· Identify and address profitability improvement opportunities for all AFR property insurance products.
· Keep team(s) informed regarding important developments and changes within the department and across the enterprise.
· Maintain an “open door” policy that encourages communication and engagement.
· Guide team(s) effectively through change.
· Lead catastrophe planning and post catastrophic event analysis.
· Lead property exposure monitoring and management efforts.
· Assist in the creation and management of the department’s annual budget.
· Perform other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements:
· A strong commitment to AFR’s mission, vision, and values is required.
· A bachelor’s degree is required. Comparable leadership, industry, and/or business experience will be considered as a substitute for a college degree.
· At least 7 years of insurance underwriting or comparable experience is required. At least 10 years of insurance underwriting or comparable experience is preferred.
· At least 3 years of prior leadership experience is required.
· A track record of outstanding performance and achievement is required.
· Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required.
· A commitment to innovation and continuous improvement is required.
· A creative—and effective—approach to problem-solving is required.
· Excellent relationship-building and teamwork skills are required.
· The ability to consistently remain calm under pressure is required.

· An established understanding of the insurance industry and the departmental interdependencies and interactions within an insurance company is required.
Certificates/Licenses
· CPCU and other insurance industry designations are preferred, but not required. A commitment to insurance industry and leadership education helps leaders model the way.
· An Oklahoma Insurance Producer License is preferred.
