Subject Matter Expert in Refugee Support and Translation
Position Summary:
We are seeking a Subject Matter Expert with expertise in refugee support and translation to provide guidance and recommendations to a team supporting a government agency. The team will be responsible for translating documents into common resettled refugee languages and coordinating on-site interpretation services for small-scale events with stakeholders or refugees in various locations throughout the United States.
Responsibilities:
- Provide expert guidance and recommendations on translating documents from English to common resettled refugee languages to ensure effective communication and understanding among refugees.
- Collaborate with the team to develop a comprehensive translation strategy and guidelines for accurate and culturally appropriate translations.
- Review and edit translated documents to ensure quality and adherence to established guidelines and standards.
- Advise the team on best practices for on-site interpretation services, including the selection and hiring of qualified interpreters.
- Coordinate event space rental for small-scale events involving stakeholders or refugees in different locations throughout the U.S.
- Identify suitable event spaces that meet the specific needs and requirements of the stakeholders and refugee communities.
- Liaise with event space owners or rental agencies to secure appropriate venues and negotiate rental terms.
- Ensure that event spaces are accessible, inclusive, and meet all necessary requirements for a successful event.
- Provide recommendations on resources needed for events, such as audiovisual equipment, seating arrangements, catering, and any specific cultural or religious considerations.
- Collaborate with the team to develop and maintain schedules and milestones for timely completion of translation and event coordination tasks.
- Monitor and evaluate the overall effectiveness of the translation and interpretation services provided by the team and suggest improvements as needed.
Requirements:
- In-depth knowledge and understanding of common resettled refugee languages, cultures, and sensitivities.
- At least 10 years of social work, refugee resettlement, immigrant support, and/or non-profit experience.
- Expertise in translating documents from English to common resettled refugee languages, ensuring accuracy and cultural relevance.
- Strong organizational and planning skills to coordinate event space rental and ensure smooth logistics for small-scale events.
- Familiarity with event planning and coordination, including knowledge of suitable event venues and resources.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to provide guidance and recommendations to the team and liaise with stakeholders, event space owners, and interpreters.
- Detail-oriented mindset to ensure high-quality translations and successful event coordination.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
- Previous experience in refugee support, translation, interpretation services, or event coordination is highly desirable.
