Reports To: Middle School Building PrincipalEssential Job Functions: The Dean of Students is a support professional working under the direct supervision of the Principal. As a member of the certified bargaining unit, he/she shall provide leadership for both the school department and the High School, and he/she shall represent the High School as appropriate at official school and community functions.The Dean of Students provides leadership and assistance in student management and discipline within the school, works with the administrative team and faculty, and assists the Principal in providing direction to improve the school learning environment.The Dean of Students provides input into the overall student management of the school. He/she assists the Principal in administering the community and public relations program of the school.The Dean of Students, in conjunction with the Principal, develops annual goals that will become part of the criteria used to evaluate the very effectiveness of this certified bargaining unit position.The Dean of Students does not participate in the supervision or evaluation of teachers.Specific Responsibilities and Duties: To assist the Principal, the Associate Principal and the Assistant Principal with the overall management of student behavior, discipline and student activities. Duties are to include the implementation and enforcement of the schools approved Code of Discipline and to serve as a resource person for teachers on student management issues.To implement a disciplinary program based on positive behavioral expectations and the approved Code of Discipline.To provide, where applicable, input, assistance and direction to team facilitators and subject matter specialists and to attend team/departmental meetings to discuss disciplinary issues and other needs and concerns around student supervision school climate.To collaborate with the appropriate supervisory staff to implement a program of pupil management and accounting to include student attendance, tardiness and maintaining records of disciplinary referrals.To work cooperatively with all students, parents, agencies or other individuals who interact with the school in efforts to strengthen home-school and community-school relationships.To work closely with the office of the Principal, the Associate Principal, the Assistant Principal, and the faculty at all times to keep them informed of all pertinent issues and activities associated with the Deans Office.To assist the administration in supervising proms, dances, homecoming and grade level activities.To advise the administration on disciplinary measures to be taken against all students who are referred/assigned to the Dean.
Contact parents and conduct parental meetings as needed for reinstatement from suspension.To consistently, fairly, and equitably enforce all school rules and regulations with respect to the approved Code of Discipline, federal and state laws and regulations, and student rights, including regulations under IDEA involving discipline for students with special needs.To monitor daily attendance of students, to make necessary telephone calls, to meet with parents, to refer truancy cases to proper authorities, and to take necessary steps to help reduce the absenteeism and truancy rates.To keep accurate documentation regarding all students who are referred to the Dean or who have behavioral, attendance or tardiness problems.To refer all serious disciplinary and attendance problems in writing to the Principal and/or designee.13. To assign students to and supervise office detention together with the Assistant Principal.To coordinate behavior management efforts with the Associate Principal and, where appropriate, to identify available resources and make appropriate referrals. To attend interscholastic athletic, co-curricular, and after-school activities as determined by the Principal.To work with administration, guidance, teachers, and others to improve discipline and student management.To assist the Principal in revising the student and parent handbooks and make recommendations for revisions in school disciplinary guidelines and procedures.Terms of Employment: The Dean of Students shall work a school year equivalent to that of Teacher Leaders (186 days).The salary of the Dean of Students shall be set in accordance with the contract between the West Warwick School Committee and the West Warwick Teachers Alliance.
