Summary of Position: The Associate Director of Development – Community Engagement is a fundraiser who is responsible for overseeing the volunteer and in-kind donations programs and managing a portfolio of community-based supporters including faith organizations, civic clubs, school/university groups and others with a starting value of approximately $150K annually. The overarching goal of the Associate Director is to help community groups and individuals understand the agency’s programs and impact and also how their members or congregants can host, act, and advocate in support of the mission. The Associate Director reports to the Director of Development Operations.
Supervisory Expectations: This position supervises the Development Manager – Volunteer and In-Kind Donations and the Volunteer Coordinator (via the AmeriCorps Vista Program).
Schedule and Work Environment: Connections for the Homeless offers a flexible work environment, as each unique position allows. This position will work at the Lake Street Church location in Evanston, IL. This is a full-time role with a flexible Monday through Friday daytime schedule as regular evening and weekend work will be required to meet with donors outside of working hours, to represent the agency at events, and to participate in agency events and board/volunteer committee meetings.
Community Partnerships Management (60%)
- Serve as primary solicitor for 50+ community groups to secure $150K+ annually and meet volunteer and in-kind donation needs across the agency
- Represent the agency at corporate, community, educational, and faith group events and gatherings
- Establish a cohesive strategy to grow and diversify the community partnership portfolio to engage volunteers, donors (philanthropic and in-kind) and advocates for the mission
- Develop and execute customized annual engagement plans to steward groups throughout the year
- Evaluate program success and analyze volunteer and community partner data trends over time
- Coordinate closely with the Associate Director of Institutional Giving to submit applications and reports to funders within the institutional portfolio and track deadlines, request amounts, and results
- Support cross-departmental working groups and serve as lead for multifaceted partnerships
- Keep strong records of partnership communications, contacts, and engagement experiences
Volunteer and In-Kind Donation Program Oversight (30%)
- Support the continued growth and function of the robust volunteer and in-kind donation programs as source of new donors and community advocate
- Ensure volunteer and in-kind donation needs are being met across the agency and collaborate with operational, programmatic, and fundraising teams to achieve these goals
- In partnership with the Volunteer and In-Kind Donation Manager, create and supervise volunteer recruitment, onboarding, and activities for individuals and groups
- Lead the recruitment of and communication with sponsors for large in-kind events, such as Winter Warmth and Gift of Giving
General Development Responsibilities (10%)
- Support overall development and implementation of the annual development team plan
- Attend and support all agency events, especially development department events
- Adhere to the Code of Conduct for Connections for the Homeless and demonstrate agency core values in all interactions with program participants and staff
- Perform other duties and complete special projects as assigned

- Experience supervising a team and fostering professional growth amongst team members
- Exceptional oral and written communications skills, including large presentations
- Excellent computer skills, including MS Office (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel)
- Excellent record keeping skills and attention to detail
- Ability to work independently with diverse populations
- Flexible schedule – will be required to attend weekend and after-hours meetings and events
- Valid Illinois Driver’s License and ability to lift 20 lbs
The following qualifications are highly desirable
- 5-7+ years working in either development or communications at a non-profit
- Bachelor’s degree and/or previous work experience in non-profit management, fundraising, communications, or marketing
Other Requirements
- Must submit to a criminal background check and submit to or provide evidence of a recent test for tuberculosis
