Primary responsibilities: Responsible for enhancing the visitor experience and supporting restoration efforts through the cleaning and maintenance of the ship and its public areas. Assists welder/fitter with worksite set-up, fire watch and general cleanliness. Learns technical and/or processes to be able to fabricate, installation and welding of various metal parts, components and structural items of the ship. Learning of the welding table and paint table and all the aspects of each. Welding experience a plus.
Primary duties:
- Performs cleaning of internal spaces for routine and preventive maintenance or in preparation of restoration and preservation efforts
- Assists and provides support of chipping, painting, grinding, welding, and prevention of corrosion of internal spaces for routine and preventive maintenance or in preparation of restoration
- Assists with and provides support of chipping, painting, grinding, welding and prevention of corrosion of deck, external spaces, superstructure and hull of ship for routine and preventative maintenance or preparation of restoration
- Performs cleaning of external spaces, hull, and superstructure for routine and preventive maintenance or in preparation of restoration and preservation efforts
- Ensures that all assigned work is carried out as scheduled in timely manner and according to applicable safety and operational standards
- Maintain Steel Preservation equipment in the proper condition by Performing Preventive Maintenance in accordance with Manufacture and Local Instructions.
- Clean-up in support of industrial activities
- Assist co-workers and other departments as directed by manager
- Work in conjunction with volunteers on occasion
Education, Experience and Skill requirements: High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, memos, write simple correspondence, effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
Ability to add / subtract two digit numbers, to multiply / divide with 10's and 100's and perform these operations by using units of American money / weight measurement, volume, and distance.
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form and to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
The Steel Preservation Helper must be able to converse with the general public in professional and courteous manner.
Valid driver’s license helpful
The employee must observe all safety regulations regarding the safe handling of hazmat materials.
Working Conditions: A Steel Preservation Assistant stands between 1/3- 2/3 of the time on the ship/pier-side in warm, humid conditions. Under 1/3 of the time is spent in humid/wet conditions and high places up to 50 feet or more. A Steel Preservation Assistant may walk through parts of the battleship currently undergoing restoration with exposure to loud noise, fumes, chips, and particles. Work in small and/or confined spaces. Must be able to wear a respirator and safety harness when needed.
Schedule: FT- 40 hours per week Monday-Friday, schedule dependent upon current projects.
Physical requirements: A Steel Preservation Assistant spends over 2/3 of the time using hands to finger, handle, feel, reach with hands and arms, talking and/or hearing. 1/3 to 2/3 of the time is spent bending, twisting, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling. Less than 1/3 of the time is spent sitting. The Steel Preservation Assistant may need to lift or move objects weighing as little as 10 pounds and no more than 50 pounds including tools and machinery. The job requires the ability to lift trash receptacles up and into a large dumpster. A Steel Preservation Assistant needs excellent general vision, good peripheral vision, the ability to judge distance and a sense of smell in order to ensure the safety of employees and visitors as well as work in dimly lit areas. Excellent vision is also required for the safe handling of hazmat material. Sitting, standing and/or walking for 1-8 hours per day.'
