Veterinary Assistant:
Canines, Cats & Critters USVI Veterinary Hospital is looking for a Veterinary Assistant to join our team. Experience is preferred, but we are willing to train the right candidate. We are a busy practice offering full-service medical care, preventive care, surgical services, and advanced dentistry. Our team is like family, and we are excited to welcome a new member! We have a simple idea that our clients with their pets receive the same care and attention that we ourselves would hope to find. We provide conscientious, knowledgeable medical care and treat our patients with the same kindness and consideration they receive at home. Our team is very hardworking so we are looking for someone who wants to jump in and learn.
Minimum Requirements:
The ideal candidate must be comfortable working with animals, able to lift 40lb, have reliable transportation, reside on St. John and be on-call on a rotating schedule.
Responsibilities:
- Prepare patients for surgical procedures by completing venipuncture, catheter placement, lab sample collection
- Admit, monitor and discharge hospital patients
- Assist veterinarians while in appointments and restrain pets during examinations or vaccinations
- Feed, groom and weigh pets
- Keep cages clean and bathe pets as needed
- Soothe upset or frightened pets
- Administer medications and treatments
- Observe pet behavior or health condition and report to the veterinarian
- Help in cases of emergencies
- Handle administrative duties such as scheduling appointments and preparing medical records
- Maintain accurate, complete records, inventory and treatment logs
- Sterilize equipment and clean examination rooms
- Reassure clients that their pets are being cared for and explain treatment plans
- Advise pet owners on nutrition and general healthcare
Preferred Qualifications:
- Proven experience as a Veterinary Assistant or similar position working with pets
- Experience in an administrative role is a plus
- Current or former pet ownership is an advantage
- Excellent communication skills
- Patient and caring personality
- Ability to follow instructions properly
- Comfortable being around pets (cats, dogs, birds, reptiles etc.)
- Ability to meet the physical demands of the job (e.g. lift up to 40 lbs)
- Availability to occasionally work in emergencies
