Job Title: Ophthalmic Technician
Reports to: Clinic Manager
As an Ophthalmic Technician, you play a vital role in supporting ophthalmologists in the treatment and care of patients through a range of technical duties.
Key responsibilities include:

Obtaining medical histories of patients.

Conducting various ocular function tests, including distance and near visual acuity, color vision, muscle balance, intraocular tension, auto refraction, retinoscopy, and lensometry (reading spectacles).

Fitting all types of contact lenses using a keratometer and instructing patients in lens care and insertion.

Assisting physicians in minor office surgeries.

Administering medications as directed by ophthalmologists, changing dressings, and providing instructions for home care.

Maintaining inventory of consumable supplies, medications, and small instruments.

Ensuring the upkeep of ophthalmic instruments, including cleaning lenses, mirrors, prisms, and replacing bulbs.

Serving as an instructor to staff when necessary in clinic routines and standard ophthalmic procedures.

Qualifications:
Ophthalmic Assistant

High school diploma, completion of basic and advanced home-study courses approved by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology.

Two years of experience, including one year in a medical or related field.

Prefer completion of the home study course for Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology within one year of hire date.
Certified Ophthalmic Assistant - Optional

High school graduation or equivalent, plus 1 year of work experience in Ophthalmology (clinical program practicum experience preferred); 1 year of college preferred.

Must complete the home study course for Joint Commission of Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology.

Certified as COA by JCAHPO.
Certified Ophthalmic Technician - Optional

Graduation from an accredited approved program for Ophthalmic Technicians.

1 year experience as an Ophthalmic Assistant or equivalent and certification as a Certified Ophthalmic Technician by Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO).
Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technician - Optional

Bachelor's degree in science or a related field.

Successful completion of an accredited ophthalmic medical assistant program.

Certification as a Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technologist by Joint Commission of Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO).

2 years relevant experience.
