The Legislative Coordinator for the New York Association of Convenience Stores (NYACS) will play a pivotal role in advancing the association's advocacy initiatives. This position requires a highly motivated and detail-oriented individual with a deep understanding of legislative processes, strong communication skills, and the ability to build relationships with key stakeholders. The Legislative Coordinator will work closely with the President and Board of Directors to monitor and influence legislative and regulatory developments impacting the convenience store industry in the state of New York. This position works closely with NYACS’ contracted government relations firm and reports directly to the association President.
Key Responsibilities
Advocacy Strategy: Work with the Legislative Committee to develop advocacy strategies in support of NYACS' legislative priorities.
Legislative and Policy Monitoring: Monitor and research regulatory and legislative changes affecting the convenience store industry, providing timely updates, summaries, and analyses to NYACS leadership and membership.
Compliance and Reporting: Ensure the organization adheres to all relevant laws by maintaining accurate compliance documentation and preparing timely reports for regulatory authorities, stakeholders, and internal teams.
Stakeholder Engagement and Coalition Building: Cultivate relationships with key legislators and officials, represent NYACS at relevant events, engage with industry partners to amplify advocacy efforts, and collaborate with external organizations on legislative priorities.
Communication and Outreach: Gather feedback from NYACS leadership and members for advocacy campaigns, coordinate communication efforts to mobilize members, draft and disseminate advocacy materials, monitor media coverage of industry issues, provide updates to NYACS leadership, and submit regular content on legislative and regulatory issues for NYACS publications.
Legislative Events: Assist in organizing legislative events, ensuring effective representation of NYACS members in advocacy days, meetings with policymakers, and press conferences.
Operational Responsibilities: Provide support for association management as directed by the President, participate in planning and executing the annual trade show and fall conference, and assist with administrative tasks related to membership management, communication, and office operations.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Political Science, Public Administration, or a related field.
- Proven experience in legislative affairs or government relations, preferably in a trade association setting.
- Strong understanding of New York State legislative processes and regulatory environments.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to analyze and synthesize complex legislative information.
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Familiarity with New York State Commission on Ethics and Lobbying in Government (formerly JCOPE).
